Environmental, Health and Safety Specialist III
This is a fully onsite role based at our Covington, KY location at 155 W 38th Street. We welcome applicants from all locations within the US. Please note that relocation assistance is not provided for this position, and any relocation costs will be the responsibility of the candidate.

Our PPD® Laboratory Services team has a direct impact on improving patient health through the expertise of scientists, industry thought-leaders and therapeutic experts. Discover Impactful Work:
Maintains environmental, health and safety programs and supports multiple sites across the organization. Assists management team with monitoring environmental compliance and safety metrics (i.e. chemical safety, ergonomics, illness and injury prevention). Conducts compliance training, audits and inspects sites or lab environments to ensure compliance with global occupational safety and health standards. Recommends corrective action where hazard or risk exist. Helps manage current OSHA Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) sites as well as assist other sites with preparing for and obtaining their VPP Star designation.
A Day in the Life:
  • Practices and enforces good safety practices. Responds to inquiries and provides follow-up to health, safety, and environmental issues to site management.
  • Ensures that all licensing, permitting, or other environmental, health or safety requirements are met at assigned site and takes appropriate actions to ensure that any non-compliance issues are resolved.
  • Maintains up to date knowledge and ensures that procedures meet federal, state, and local requirements (i.e. OSHA, EPA, DOT, etc.) Develops and updates all health and safety related mandated procedures for assigned facilities.
  • Updates site management on new or changed regulations in a timely manner. Pro-actively makes recommendations on feasible solutions and alternatives for compliance.
  • Ensures safe removal and disposal of hazardous/biological waste from facility on a regular basis. Maintains and monitors waste manifest system. Completes reporting forms and documents for all required regulatory agencies.
  • Develops, conducts and supports entry level team members in employee health and safety training programs, including refresher trainings as required by regulations.
  • Conducts regular walk-downs and yearly self-assessments of assigned facilities and conducts employee health hazard exposure monitoring to ensure OSHA compliance. Oversees all ergonomic related issues. Makes recommendations as appropriate.
  • Collaborates with corporate Worker's Compensation Administrator to supply information on related claims to insurance company. Assists with or conducts work-related injury/illness investigation.
  • May lead Health & Safety committees, act as Radiation Safety Officer, maintain controlled substance program, evaluate/maintain all safety equipment, coordinate fire drills and/or work with assigned site on CAP inspections or other audit related inspections (OSHA).
  • Provides support to junior members of the team.
  • Maintains safety equipment inventory, performs periodic safety inspections, monitors hazardous waste removal vendors, and may assist in consolidating hazardous wastes.

Keys to Success:
Bachelor's degree or equivalent and relevant formal academic / vocational qualification
Previous experience that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job (comparable to 5+ years).
In some cases, an equivalency, consisting of a combination of appropriate education, training and/or directly related experience, will be considered sufficient for an individual to meet the requirements of the role.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • In-depth knowledge of OSHA, EPA, DOT, ICAO, and other applicable regulations, including ability to support VPP site management
  • Firm knowledge of worker's compensation requirements, laboratory and hazardous waste regulations to include hazardous chemical/biohazard storage and disposal regulations
  • Solid understanding of air monitoring strategies
  • Strong presentation skills and the ability to provide effective training
  • Solid problem-solving skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong judgment and business acumen
  • Strong computer skills
  • May require familiarity with College of American Pathologists (CAP) inspection process
