Under the direct supervision of the Administrative Director of Laboratory Services, a Laboratory Manager directly manages and supervises all functions of their assigned laboratory department. Oversees all daily functions of the laboratory /phlebotomy, including staffing, problem resolution, operational parameters, customer service, supplies, training/orientation of staff, and adherence to all regulatory requirements (CAP, CLIA, TJC, FDA and OSHA). In the absence of the Laboratory Director, the Manager may then have oversight of the Laboratory.

Please refer to the Core Skills/Competencies and additional Hospital-Wide Skills/Expectations sections of this document for additional information regarding the requirements of this position. The laboratory manager is responsible for personnel management.


Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions:


Management Functions

  • Gives clear concise directions (oral and written) to laboratory staff.

  • Establishes the monthly work schedule and on-call schedule with sufficient lead time.

  • Monitors staff performance daily and intervenes promptly when needed.

  • Demonstrates effective problem-solving skills.

  • Arranges coverage for time off requests for technologists.

  • Attends committee meetings as assigned.

  • Monitors labor on a daily basis to ensure meeting productivity goals.

  • Is responsible for or participates in the development of the annual operating and capital budgets for either the lab as a whole or the assigned department.

Orientation/Education/Competencies

  • Establishes orientation schedule for new employees.

  • Monitors progress of orientees.

  • Maintains employee education files.

  • Monitors staff competency/education completion rate and initiates action if needed.

  • Initiates / develops training sessions, as needed.

  • Attends / completes all required education on time.

  • Ensures all orientation paperwork is completed prior to employee beginning work

Quality/Compliance

  • Reviews general laboratory procedure manuals once every two years.

  • Makes policy revisions promptly.

  • Ensures general laboratory meets all requirements for accreditation (CAP, CLIA, TJC, and OSHA).

  • Coordinates proficiency testing.

  • Demonstrates working knowledge of laboratory compliance program.

  • Successful completion of annual compliance competency.

Performance Improvement

  • Demonstrates working knowledge of hospital and laboratory performance improvement (PI)plan.

  • Assists in the identification and resolution of PI issues.

  • Documents deviations from standard operating procedures on the PI logs.

  • Any other duties as assigned.

  • Builds a culture of trust and engagement as reflected in the Great Place to Work Trust Index Survey at a direct report, workgroup and hospital/entity level.

Required Minimum Education:

  • Bachelors Medical Science


Required Minimum License(s) and Certification(s):

All certifications are required upon hire unless otherwise stated.

  • MLS(ASCP) - Medical Laboratory Scientist or MT(AMT) - Medical Technologist or MT(AAB) - Medical Technologist or RN - Reg Nurse (Single State) or BC-PA-CLIN - Brd Cert-PA-Pathology-Clinical or RN-COMPACT - RN - Multi-state Compact

Required Minimum Experience:
  • Minimum 8 years Clinical experience in a healthcare institution with a minimum of two (2) years in a supervisory position. Required


Required Minimum Skills:

  • Must possess the ability to communicate effectively (orally and in writing), establish and accomplish objectives, function independently and under pressure, organize work to prevent delays, demonstrate critical thinking skills, and promote collaborative problem-solving both within the department and hospital-wide.

  • Must have a knowledge of laboratory concepts and applications, and laboratory regulatory requirements.

  • Must be able to perform effectively in a stressful and fast paced work environment.

  • Must have the ability to prioritize appropriately.

  • Must be detail oriented and have the capacity to effectively multitask throughout the work shift. Must have excellent communication skills and the capacity to interact professionally with a variety of customers, including but not limited to patients, families, co-workers, volunteers, and physicians throughout the work shift.

  • Must possess the ability to function independently, yet productively as a cooperative team member with various work teams associated with the position

  • Must be compliant, with a willingness to follow all Hospital policies as well as the established practices, protocols and procedures of the position, department, and applicable professional standards.
