Job description


As a Laboratory Technician at Bath Iron Works, this position will provide support services to a busy and dynamic shipyard. Most tasks support industrial activities both shipboard and land side.
Tasks of the Laboratory Technician include but not limited to:
  • Chemical & physical testing.
  • Calibration of BIW equipment.
  • Industrial hygiene monitoring.
  • Environmental inspections at all facilities.
  • Shipboard audits.
  • Sampling and visual inspections.
  • Helping with coordination of waste vendors.
  • Other audits and tasks as assigned by the Laboratory Supervisor.

The Laboratory Technician must have the capability to become a Shipyard Competent Person within 6 months of being hired, and will then be expected to perform the following tasks:
  • Confined space audits.
  • Hot work permit review and authorization.
  • Spray paint permit review and authorization.

Required/Preferred Education/Training
  • Bachelor's Degree in chemistry, biochemistry, biology, environmental studies, marine studies, or environmental engineering preferred, or, alternatively, an Associate's Degree or minor in the same fields with at least 2 years of pertinent recent work experience is required.
  • Specific demonstrated experience as a Shipyard Competent Person may be substituted for educational requirements.

Required/Preferred Experience
  • Candidate must be able to plan and coordinate time dependent activities required.
  • Candidate must be have strong communication skills and be able to think critically to solve problems required.
  • Candidate must have strong interpersonal skills, be a team player, and be flexible and able to adjust to changing priorities required.
  • Pertinent work experience must be demonstrated through appropriate knowledge required.
  • Shipyard experience is preferred, but not required.
  • Must be physically able to lift, crawl, climb and work in confined spaces and at heights required.
  • Technical writing skills and knowledge of OSHA 1915 and/or environmental regulations preferred.
  • Working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and familiarity with Access preferred.
