Job description

Position Summary:
Under the direction of the Laboratory Director, Assistant Lab Director, and/or Coordinator, assists in the organization and daily operations of the laboratory. The Senior Tech (ST) is responsible for performing various test on body fluids, tissues and/or exudates for diagnosing and treating diseases. Performs and oversees instrument maintenance, calibration, and quality measures as required, and can readily recognize errors. The ST must be able to enter, process, and result all patient test results and demographic information timely and accurately, to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of patients. The ST must provide attention to detail.

The ST will train staff regarding departmental policies/procedures for specimen handling, processing, data entry into laboratory information systems, safety/universal precautions and patient confidentiality. The ST will be responsible for training new personnel and students. Must critique lab performance daily and is responsible for the performance and evaluation of the lab staff in their designated area. Additionally, the ST will assist in the implementation and maintenance of all policies and procedures required by hospital, laboratory, and any governing regulatory agencies to assure the ongoing safe and efficient daily operation of department services. Supports and monitor customer and employee service expectations. Will ensure that the proper operation for high-quality test performance is achieved by performing daily maintenance, while ensuring an awareness of supply stock and replenishing methods. The ST acts as resource to laboratory professionals working in various laboratory sections to investigate missing samples, inappropriately ordered samples, and facilitates appropriate STAT handling of samples. Responsible for monitoring daily turn around times and troubleshooting for their respective departments. Reviews pending lists and resolves issues as needed. Communicates effectively with clients and staff.  The ST is responsible for testing in a designated bench area and will assure that all lab results are reported in compliance with all CAP, JCAHO, and other governing bodies. Adheres to the highest quality standards. Will follow best practice methodologies prescribed, demonstrating skill and ability to follow laboratory compliance policies and procedures. The ST will collect and provides all department quality data indicators to the Laboratory Quality Assurance department or other entities required, while managing expected workflow in all areas to ensure that all work is completed in a timely fashion for specimen collection, and specimen processing. This includes special projects and process improvements. The ST will troubleshoot and problem solve laboratory orders and requirements and investigate errors and address consoling/coaching events.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Medical Lab Technician through one of two ways required:
    • Associates of Science degree in Medical Technology or;
    • Bachelors of Science (BS) degree with Board Certification as an MLT.
  • Medical Technologist through one of three ways preferred:
    • *Bachelors of Science degree in Medical Technology or;
    • High School Diploma and grandfathered as Medical Technologist by DHEC Health, Education, and Welfare
    • High School Diploma and Qualified as Medical Technologist through three years’ experience on the bench with Continuing education for all three years and passing Certification as a Medical Technologist

*The Administrative Lab Director reserves the option to require a Bachelor of Science degree in a chemical, physical, biological, clinical lab science or medical technology area when duties under the open position need to comply with CLIA/CAP General or Technical Supervisor responsibilities. 

*Primary Source verification of education is conducted in accordance with the Human Resources office standard process.  Determination of course of study in a chemical, physical, biological, clinical lab science or medical technology will be verified by the HR representative and the Administrative Lab Director.  When a question concerning the validation of a degree matching these core areas exists, the educational transcripts will be required.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 1-year supervisory experience in the clinical laboratory preferred.

Licensure/Certification/Registration:

  • ASCP or AMT certification required. 

Special Skills:

  • Exemplary core customer service skills strongly required.
  • Knowledge of program development and administration preferred.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Strong PC skills required.
  • Strong verbal communication skills required.
