Basic Job Functions:

Nucor Steel West Virginia is seeking an Intermediate Laboratory Technician. The role of the Laboratory Technician 2 is an intermediate position within the Technical Services team responsible for independently collecting, preparing, and testing samples in the Central Lab, building on the foundation established at Lab Tech 1 level. This position focuses on independent sample preparation and the execution of mechanical testing - tensile, hardness, Charpy, and bake hardening - per established procedures, ensuring test data is complete, traceable, and correctly transferred to UMS/MIPs.The Lab Tech 2 is expected to verify sample integrity, identify and escalate obvious errors or nonconformances, maintain equipment cleanliness and basic condition, and support Lab Tech 1 teammates through informal coaching, example, and training of new teammates.

 

Key Responsibilities (but not limited to):

Safety & Culture

  • Follow all Safety, Quality, and Environmental policies without exception
  • Demonstrate commitment to Nucor's Safety First culture in all activities
  • Follow all PPE, LOTOTO, and lab safety procedures
  • Maintain clean, organized, and hazard-free work areas (5S/housekeeping)
  • Communicate unsafe conditions immediately

 

Sample Collection & Preparation

  • Perform all Lab Tech 1 responsibilities, including monitoring samples to be tested in Level 2 and UMS, collecting samples throughout the Mill, and receiving samples in the Central Lab
  • Independently prepare samples using cutting and machining equipment according to the plan and priorities
  • Produce test samples that meet dimensional and surface-quality requirements
  • Verify sample integrity before testing and identify obvious preparation errors
  • Handle samples and specimens safely throughout the lab process

 

Mechanical Testing

  • Perform mechanical testing - tensile, hardness, Charpy, and bake hardening - per established procedures
  • Test specimens on the manual tensile machines
  • Execute testing consistently and repeatably to support lab throughput
  • Identify and eliminate obvious errors or nonconformances and escalate appropriately

 

Testing & Data Integrity

  • Ensure test data is complete, traceable, and transferred to UMS/MIPs
  • Properly open lab orders in Level 2/UMS
  • Follow established ASTM, ISO, and internal procedures for testing
  • Maintain traceability of samples and results
  • Escalate abnormal or questionable results to higher-level technicians

Equipment & Maintenance Support

  • Maintain equipment cleanliness and basic condition
  • Maintain orderly work areas and tooling
  • Assist with routine inspection, cleaning, and basic preventive maintenance of lab equipment
  • Ensure proper supply levels of consumables
  • Report equipment issues or irregular performance

The position participates in a rotating schedule that my require hours outside of standard work hours, including overtime, weekends, and holidays.

Safety is the most important part of all jobs within Nucor; therefore, candidates must be able to demonstrate the ability to initiate, lead, and uphold safety policies, practices, procedures, and housekeeping standards at all times.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Four-year degree in chemistry, material science, or related field.
  • Minimum of one year performing preparation and mechanical testing or similar experience in lab activities
