Job description

GENERAL SUMMARY:
Under regular supervision, and according to established procedures, performs a variety
of routine laboratory support procedures including order entry, specimen/material pickup, transportation, tracking, receipt, and processing. May utilize a variety of information
systems to perform tasks. Operates and maintains pre and post analytic laboratory
equipment which may include laboratory automation. May perform occasional
phlebotomy service if required at that site. Interacts with patients, laboratory staff and
caregivers in a courteous and professional manner.
PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Prepares patient specimens for laboratory testing with particular emphasis on preanalytic and post-analytic processes
2. Accurately enters patient demographic, insurance, and test order information into
variety of computer information systems according to standard protocols in a timely
manner. Maintains confidentiality of patient information
3. Reviews laboratory request forms for complete and accurate demographic and order
entry information. Resolves and documents discrepancies as needed. Organizes
and maintains storage of laboratory submission forms per protocol
4. Exercises care in specimen handling, preparation, storage, and order entry to
protect the identify and integrity of samples
5. Performs and records maintenance for pre and post analytic laboratory equipment.
Equipment includes specimen barcode label printers, freezers, refrigerators,
centrifuges, glassware cleaning equipment, autoclaves as well as pre and postanalytic laboratory automation system as needed
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
1. High school graduate or equivalent required
2. Strong computer skills; Microsoft Office Suite or similar software
3. Experience in a medical setting, hospital or clinic laboratory preferred
4. Familiarity with medical terminology and human anatomy preferred
5. Candidate with college-level course work in science preferred
