Job Description Summary
The Medical Laboratory Technology Program is looking for someone to fulfill an assistant position for the Microbiology course.
Lab Assistants support faculty by helping prepare laboratories, maintaining an organized and safe learning environment, and assisting students during hands-on activities.
Duties
Responsibilities
Lab Preparation & Set-Up
  • Prepare reagents, controls, media, slides, stains, and solutions for all MLT laboratory courses.
  • Set up equipment, instrumentation, and supplies prior to each lab session.
  • Pipette, aliquot, label, and organize patient sample simulations as needed.
  • Assist with prepping unknowns, QC materials, and teaching specimens.
  • Ensure proper storage of chemicals, samples, and supplies.

Lab Support & Instruction
  • Assist faculty during lab sessions by helping students with procedures, instrumentation, troubleshooting, and basic concepts.
  • Reinforce safety protocols and good laboratory practices.
  • Monitor workflow to maintain an efficient, professional learning environment.
  • Answer student questions and guide them through step-by-step technical procedures.
  • Support students in Hematology, Chemistry, Urinalysis, Immunology, Blood Bank, Microbiology, and related lab activities.

Safety & Compliance
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe laboratory environment.
  • Follow all institutional, OSHA, and CLIA-related safety guidelines.
  • Ensure proper handling and disposal of reagents, sharps, biohazardous waste, and chemicals.
  • Assist with routine safety checks and equipment calibration or cleaning.

Inventory & Organization
  • Track supplies and notify faculty when restocking is needed.
  • Assist with media ordering, reagent preparation, and equipment maintenance schedules.
  • Help organize storage areas, teaching materials, and shared lab spaces.

General Program Support
  • Collaborate with instructors to ensure labs run smoothly and efficiently.
  • Support new lab implementations or updates to course materials.
  • Perform miscellaneous duties as assigned to assist the instructional team.

Minimum Requirements
MLT or MLS ASCP Certification
