Description:

The Specimen Processor is a key member of the laboratory team responsible for the accurate receipt, processing, preparation, and distribution of patient specimens (blood, urine, body fluids, tissues, and other samples). This role ensures specimen integrity and timely delivery to testing departments, supporting high-quality diagnostic results while maintaining strict compliance with laboratory policies, safety standards, and regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities
  • Receive, sort, and log incoming specimens from couriers, clinics, and client sites.
  • Verify patient demographics, test orders, and specimen labeling for accuracy and completeness.
  • Prepare specimens for analysis, including centrifuging, aliquoting, labeling, and storing at appropriate temperatures (room temp, refrigerated, or frozen).
  • Enter and update specimen information into the Laboratory Information System (LIS) with high accuracy.
  • Distribute processed specimens to the appropriate laboratory sections or send-outs to reference laboratories.
  • Perform quality control checks and reject specimens that do not meet acceptance criteria, documenting issues appropriately.
  • Maintain specimen integrity throughout the pre-analytical phase by following proper handling protocols.
  • Clean and maintain laboratory equipment, workstations, and processing areas.
  • Dispose of biohazardous waste and sharps according to safety regulations.
  • Assist with inventory management of supplies and reagents.
