Job description

Clinical Lab Assistant / Phlebotomist-HHK-Sacaton

Position Summary: Draws blood and other specimens from patients for analysis or other medical purposes and assists with diagnostic testing in the laboratory and/or other patient care areas by performing the following duties personally. Responsible for ensuring that all critical tasks are fulfilled on a timely basis.

Critical Tasks:

  • Efficiently performs venipuncture, capillary collections with minimum discomfort and according to established policies and procedures.
  • Independently procures specimens.
  • Establishes positive identification of the patient prior to performing procedures
  • Aliquots urine and blood specimens; centrifuges blood and all types of body fluids; prepares samples for reference laboratory analysis.
  • Maintains specimen integrity by using aseptic techniques following clinical laboratory standards and department procedures.
  • Processes and registers specimens using the laboratory information system.
  • Accurately and completely labels specimens according to established laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Performs and results waived laboratory testing procedures in various departments.
  • Demonstrates understanding and effective use of the laboratory and hospital information systems for inquiry, order entry, test cancellation, documentation and collection in support of laboratory services.
  • Assists with loading specimens on analyzers in various departments.
  • Cleans and sanitizes equipment, specimen procurement and processing areas. Monitors bio-hazard containers in the lab and discards sealed containers in the appropriate location.
  • Maintains accurate documentation of workload. Monitors and follows-up on specimen collection requests that have not been completed.
  • Actively participates in quality improvement processes through proactive team interactions and problem solving. Identifies workflow inefficiencies and works in partnership with management to improve operations.
  • Demonstrates ability to clearly communicate, both orally and in writing, while performing all essential functions.
  • Performs other tasks and duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • 1 year phlebotomy work experience in a laboratory environment.
  • Certified Phlebotomy Technician Certificate preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to relate to diverse cultures and specifically the Gila River Community and/or other Native American cultures and community health services.
