Job description

Shift/schedule: Full Time (40 hrs/wk)

GENERAL SUMMARY

The Assistant Laboratory Manager of the Core Laboratory reports to the Core Laboratory Manager. The Assistant Laboratory Manager of the Core Laboratory assists the Core Laboratory Manager in management of the Core Lab and develops, implements, monitors, and coordinates the day-to-day operation of the Chemistry, Hematology, sections of the Laboratory. The Assistant Laboratory Manager of the Core Lab also provides support to labs within other departments of SOMC (Anti-Coagulation Clinic and Cancer Center). Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

• High School Diploma or successful completion of an equivalent High School Exam Required

• Bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical or biological science or medical technology from an accredited institution required OR Associate's degree of Applied Science (MLT) Degree with experience meeting CAP requirements.

Licensure:

• MLT, MT, or MLS licensure by ASCP or AMT required

• BMVL required (Must maintain eligibility to drive as determined by SOMC insurance carriers

Experience:

• Approximately three years progressively more responsible related work experience is necessary in order to gain comprehensive technical knowledge of a wide variety of Laboratory techniques and procedures, equipment, operation and regulatory and accrediting agency standards, and to be able to organize and coordinate activities of a large staff.

JOB SPECIFIC DUTIES AND PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS

The following is a summary of the major job duties of this job. Other duties may be performed, both major and minor, which are not mentioned below. Specific activities may change from time to time.

1. Coordinates the day-to-day operations of the Core Laboratory (Chemistry and Hematology). Provides support to labs within other SOMC departments (Anti-Coagulation Clinics and Cancer Center).

2. Assists the manager with staff assignments. Makes workflow decisions to ensure efficient operation of section to meet expected turn-around-times.

3. Monitors daily productivity of staff.

4. Reviews abnormal and atypical test results.

5. Acts as a resource person for the staff for technical related problems. Ensures that established policies and procedures are followed.

6. Ensures that Core Lab instrument calibration, maintenance, linearity checks, and correlations are performed; performs these functions as needed. Maintains documentation of maintenance and service records.

7. Ensures that quality control for Core Lab instrumentation is performed and evaluated for shifts and trends.

8. Develops proficiency testing schedule for the Core Lab. Reviews proficiency survey testing program results and follows up on any proficiency testing failures.

9. Evaluates new methodologies and instrumentation. Ensures testing for the implementation of new methods and procedures is performed and reviews associated documentation.

10. Writes, reviews, and updates policy and procedure manuals to comply with CAP and CLIA-88 standards. Prepares section to meet inspection requirements.

11. Keeps current with regulations affecting the Core Laboratory.

12. Coordinates and participates as needed in the orientation and training of staff. Completes staff competency checklists. Performs staff competency testing. Oversees and develops section educational needs.

13. Provides input for staff performance appraisals. Maintains documentation of work performance and behaviors.

14. Guides, directs, and counsels staff regarding performance, problem solving, decision making and behaviors. Ensures that staff complies with the SOMC Code of Conduct, uses AIDET, uses AHEART, follows Red Rules, and follows safety policies.

15. Monitors Incident Reports and follows up on reports as assigned.

16. Assists manager with coaching and corrective actions when necessary.

17. Assists manager with staff meetings. Regularly communicates with staff. Promotes positive intradepartmental relationships.

18. Performs and monitors preventative maintenance, troubleshooting and repairs on equipment. Contacts outside service personnel when appropriate. Maintains documentation of maintenance and service records.

19. Monitors dashboard indicators related to area of responsibility. Collects data for dashboard. Assists manager with development and implementation of action plans/task lists. Implements and maintains strategic value standards for staff related to Core Laboratory section.

20. Ensures staff delivers a high level of customer service. Promptly investigates customer complaints. Follows up with patients and patient relations as appropriate.

21. Assists the manager with planning, designing, and implementing services that meet the customers’ needs. Collaborates with the medical staff and nursing staff, both in-house and outreach clients, to meet their customer needs.

22. Provides information regarding resource needs within area of responsibility. Provides information to aid budget variance analysis.

23. Maintains appropriate levels of inventory. Orders reagents and supplies to ensure continuous service.

24. Serves on departmental committees and teams when needed.

25. Assists manager with MLT student interns. Serves as an educational resource for students.

26. Makes self readily available for staff and customer needs.

27. Performs the duties of an MLT as needed.

28. Acts as a Technical Consultant when performing competencies
