Supervises and coordinates the activities of personnel engaged in research and experimental testing. Maintains lab operations. May investigate complaints regarding lab services, equipment, and/or capabilities. Possesses, understands, and applies a comprehensive knowledge in area of specialization. Understands and uses effective management techniques.

  • Manages the budgets and operations of two or more research laboratories.
  • Assigns, checks, and monitors assignments of lab personnel.
  • Oversees and participates in the creation of annual budgets. Identifies funding sources and applies for grants, as appropriate.
  • Estimates personnel needs to obtain lab and research objectives.
  • Conducts personnel evaluations, recommends hiring and terminations, and performs other management function.
  • Operates with considerable latitude for unreviewed action. Reviews and evaluates the effectiveness of personnel.

Group-Specific Description: We welcome applicants with experience who are motivated to work independently in corneal and retinal function and disease. In this role, you will perform both scientific experiments and engage in lab management. This position includes project management as well as coaching or training students and new lab members.

Competencies include

Survival mouse surgery, tissue collection and histology, and behavioral studies, fluorescence microscopy, data analysis and laboratory management. In-depth knowledge of Photoshop, Image J and other image analysis software, excel including macros and automation, and PowerPoint is required. Ability to plan and conduct research in a large and complex areas of specialization. Contribute original ideas to the development and execution of projects, and to research design with Principal Investigators and scientists. Serve as co-author to prepare reports and manuscripts for publication.

The ideal candidate will possess strengths in: Corneal and/or retinal neurobiology, brain anatomy, and data analyses.
Experience with animal handling and behavior, fluorescence immunohistochemistry, confocal microscopy, transgenic animals.
Clear and engaging communication skills with team members.
Graduate degree with 5 years of experience will be considered in lieu of education.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree with 7 years experience.
