What is a lab animal attendant?

Lab Animal Attendants are professionals responsible for the care and well-being of animals used in research, teaching, or testing in laboratory settings. Their duties typically include feeding, cleaning cages, monitoring animal health, and helping maintain sanitary and safe conditions. They may also assist researchers by observing animal behavior and reporting unusual symptoms or conditions. This role is vital for ensuring ethical treatment of animals and supporting scientific research.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a lab animal attendant?

To thrive as a Lab Animal Attendant, you need knowledge of animal husbandry, basic animal care, and familiarity with laboratory protocols, often supported by a high school diploma or relevant certification. Experience with animal handling, sanitation equipment, and data recording systems such as electronic logs is typically required. Attention to detail, reliability, and a strong sense of responsibility are vital soft skills in this role. These skills and qualities are crucial to ensure the well-being of research animals, maintain accurate records, and support the integrity of scientific studies.

Support from supervisors and ongoing professional development also play a key role in ensuring attendants can handle their responsibilities efficiently and maintain a healthy work environment.
