What is a Kotlin Android App developer?

A Kotlin Android App developer is a software professional who specializes in building mobile applications for Android devices using the Kotlin programming language. Kotlin is a modern, concise, and safe language officially supported by Google for Android development. These developers are responsible for designing, coding, testing, and maintaining apps that run on smartphones and tablets powered by the Android operating system. They often work with Android SDK, APIs, and follow best practices to ensure app performance and user experience. Their role may also involve collaborating with designers, testers, and other developers throughout the app development lifecycle.

What are some common challenges faced by Kotlin Android App developers when working on large-scale projects?

Kotlin Android App developers working on large-scale projects often encounter challenges such as managing complex codebases, ensuring consistent coding standards, and optimizing app performance. Effective communication and collaboration across multidisciplinary teams—such as designers, back-end developers, and QA testers—are crucial to align on features and resolve issues efficiently. Additionally, staying up to date with evolving Android libraries and best practices is important to maintain app quality and security. These challenges are typically addressed through code reviews, agile methodologies, and continuous integration processes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Kotlin Android App developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Kotlin Android App Developer, you need strong proficiency in Kotlin programming, Android SDK, and a solid understanding of mobile app architecture, often supported by a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with Android Studio, Git, RESTful APIs, and experience with libraries such as Jetpack Compose are typically required, and certifications like Google’s Associate Android Developer can be advantageous. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical team members help developers stand out. These skills ensure the delivery of efficient, user-friendly, and maintainable mobile applications in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.

Job description

Major League Baseball is looking for a Senior Android Engineer, MLB App Feature Teams to join the team building the MLB App experiences that bring fans closer to the game, including personalized feeds, real-time scores and stats, notifications, widgets, advertising surfaces, and media experiences. You will own Android feature delivery end to end, from technical design and implementation through testing, rollout, observability, and production reliability.

This role is for an engineer who can operate independently in a large consumer app, make sound architecture decisions, raise the quality bar for the team, and use modern developer tools, including generative AI, responsibly and effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Build high-quality Android features in Kotlin and Jetpack Compose across app, media, and shared platform modules
  • Translate product requirements and Figma designs into polished, accessible, production-ready UI while maintaining cross-platform consistency with iOS
  • Design and implement clean, maintainable feature architecture that fits a modular Android codebase
  • Integrate REST and GraphQL APIs with resilient networking, thoughtful state handling, caching where appropriate, and clear failure states
  • Improve app performance, responsiveness, startup behavior, crash-free sessions, and overall reliability
  • Partner with Product, Design, iOS, Backend, QA, and Test Engineering to clarify requirements, shape technical plans, and define test coverage early
  • Monitor feature rollouts and production behavior using Firebase, Datadog, crash reporting, analytics, and release health signals
  • Own production issues from diagnosis through resolution, including root-cause analysis and follow-up prevention work
  • Drive measurable improvements in build time, delivery throughput, code quality, and engineering efficiency
  • Provide thoughtful PR reviews, mentor engineers, and help establish patterns that scale across feature teams
  • Use GenAI tools such as GitHub Copilot or similar assistants to accelerate implementation, refactoring, test generation, debugging, and documentation while retaining full engineering accountability
  • Validate AI-assisted work through tests, code review, static analysis, observability checks, and secure coding practices before merge
  • Follow internal AI usage guidance, repository conventions, data-handling expectations, and review standards

Qualifications & Skills

Required Qualifications

  • 6+ years of professional experience building production Android applications
  • Strong Kotlin, Android SDK, Jetpack Compose, coroutines, and modern Android architecture expertise
  • Experience working in modular Android codebases with shared core modules, design systems, and established architectural patterns
  • Strong REST and GraphQL integration experience, including error handling, async state management, and API contract collaboration
  • Proven testing discipline across unit, integration, snapshot, and UI testing, including experience running tests in CI
  • Experience diagnosing production issues using logs, metrics, crash reporting, analytics, and observability tools
  • Familiarity with push notifications, deep links, widgets, feature flags, experimentation, and release management
  • Strong Git workflow, code review, and written communication skills
  • Practical experience using GenAI developer tools to support software delivery, with the judgment to review, adapt, test, and explain generated code

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience building high-traffic consumer apps with millions of users
  • Media, video streaming, sports, live events, or real-time data experience
  • Experience with Firebase, Datadog, GraphQL clients, analytics platforms, remote configuration, and experimentation frameworks
  • Experience improving app startup, rendering performance, memory usage, networking efficiency, or build performance
  • Experience in large shared repositories with many contributors and multiple release trains
  • Technical leadership experience, including mentoring, architecture reviews, and cross-team delivery
  • Familiarity with responsible GenAI practices, including prompt/context hygiene, AI-assisted test creation, and evaluation of generated code quality

Senior-Level Competencies

  • Drives ambiguous product and technical problems toward clear, shippable outcomes
  • Makes pragmatic tradeoffs across quality, speed, maintainability, performance, and user impact
  • Communicates technical decisions clearly to engineering and non-engineering partners
  • Raises team standards through code reviews, design feedback, mentoring, and documentation
  • Balances feature delivery with long-term platform health and operational reliability
  • Understands the broader codebase and internal tooling deeply enough to make changes safely across module boundaries
  • Uses metrics and production signals to guide decisions rather than relying only on intuition
  • Treats GenAI as a force multiplier, not a substitute for engineering judgment, ownership, or accountability
