Work EnvironmentDesign studios, manufacturing facilities, fashion housesFabric mills, design studios, fashion companies
Industry UsageFocuses on creating knitted fabrics and patterns for apparel and accessoriesCreates overall textile patterns, prints, and fabric designs for various products

While both roles involve textile creation, a Knit Designer specializes in designing knitted fabrics and patterns, often working closely with fashion and apparel brands. A Textile Designer has a broader focus on various fabric types and patterns, including woven, printed, or textured textiles. Both roles require creative skills and industry knowledge but differ in their technical focus and production methods.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Knit Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Knit Designer, you need strong skills in textile design, color theory, pattern creation, and a solid understanding of knitting techniques, often supported by a degree in fashion or textile design. Familiarity with design software such as Adobe Illustrator, CAD programs, and sometimes knitting machine programming is typically required. Creativity, attention to detail, and effective communication are standout soft skills for collaborating with teams and translating ideas into finished products. These skills ensure innovative, technically feasible designs that meet both aesthetic and production standards.

What are some common challenges Knit Designers face when working on new collections and how can these be addressed?

Knit Designers often encounter challenges such as translating creative concepts into technically feasible knit structures, working within yarn and material limitations, and meeting tight production deadlines. Collaboration with technical teams and manufacturers is essential to ensure that designs are both innovative and manufacturable. Staying updated on industry trends and maintaining a strong understanding of knitting technology can help designers overcome these obstacles and create successful collections.

What does a Knit Designer do?

A Knit Designer is a creative professional who specializes in designing patterns and products made from knitted fabrics. They develop original knitwear concepts, select yarns and stitches, create technical drawings or samples, and often work closely with manufacturers or fashion brands to bring their designs to life. Knit Designers need a strong understanding of textile properties, color theory, and current fashion trends. Their work may include designing garments, accessories, or home décor items, and they often use both hand-knitting and machine-knitting techniques.

Job description

Cabinet Designer (AutoCAD)
Zeeland, MI | On-site

We're partnering with a well-established, high-end custom cabinetry manufacturer seeking a Cabinet Designer to join their close-knit team. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys designing one-of-a-kind luxury kitchens and custom cabinetry—not repetitive "box kitchen" layouts.

What You'll Do

  • Design custom cabinetry and millwork using AutoCAD.
  • Collaborate with homeowners, interior designers, builders, and architects to bring projects to life.
  • Meet with clients in the showroom and occasionally perform field measurements.
  • Produce detailed drawings for custom residential cabinetry and coordinate with the manufacturing team.
  • Support projects from concept through production while ensuring accuracy and attention to detail.

What We're Looking For

  • Experience designing custom kitchens and cabinetry.
  • Strong AutoCAD proficiency.
  • Ability to interpret architectural drawings and create detailed shop drawings.
  • Excellent communication skills and comfort working directly with clients.
  • Experience with luxury residential projects is preferred.
  • Hands-on construction or cabinet-building experience is a plus.

Why Join?

  • Family-oriented company with a collaborative, low-drama culture.
  • Very low employee turnover and strong long-term stability.
  • Work on unique, high-end custom projects rather than production cabinetry.
  • Financially strong company with a healthy project backlog.
  • Opportunity for increased responsibility and long-term career growth, with potential leadership opportunities over time.
