JOB OPPORTUNITY
THIS IS A VOLUNTEER NON-PAID, AT-WILL POSITION AND SERVES AT THE PLEASURE OF THE KINGS COUNTY FIRE CHIEF. VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTERS MUST RESIDE WITHIN KINGS COUNTY.
The Kings County Fire Department is looking for energetic, reliable individuals to fill Volunteer Firefighter positions throughout Kings County. Volunteering is a great way to support your local community and even prepare for a paid career in the fire and rescue services. Under direct supervision, Volunteer Firefighters will engage in fire and rescue activities. Duties are usually performed under emergency conditions, frequently involving considerable hazard. Volunteer Firefighters receive training in modern firefighting techniques and equipment, fire prevention, advanced First Aid, CPR, salvage, and related activities.
DUTY SAMPLE
Duties include but are not limited to those described below.
Respond on a fire apparatus as part of a crew to provide fire suppression, emergency medical service, rescue, hazardous materials response and other emergency and public services; participate in scheduled training and shift work, assist in the maintenance and operation of stations and equipment, assist in fire inspections for conformance with fire and life safety laws and regulations education programs; perform enforcement assignments for fire prevention; perform other related emergency and non emergency routine and special assignments as directed.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS **Minimum requirements must be met by the closing date**
Work experience for the last 15 years must be included in the work history portion of your application. It is also important that your application show all the relevant education and experience that you possess, even if it extends beyond the required previous 15 years. A resume may be attached, but it is not a substitute for completing the application and supplemental questions.
Education: High School graduation or equivalent.
Other Requirements:
  1. Must be 18 years of age;
  2. Possession of a valid driver's license issued by a State Department of Motor Vehicles. Proof of DMV driving record required upon application. Applicants must submit a current DMV driving record prior to submitting application;
  3. Provide proof of current vehicle insurance. Applicants must submit proof of current/valid vehicle insurance prior to submitting application.;
  4. Ability to pass a fingerprint check and extensive background investigation;
  5. Ability to pass and obtain First Aid and CPR certifications paid for by Kings County Fire Department;
  6. Attend and pass a Volunteer Firefighter Academy;
  7. Ability to attend 100 hours of required Firefighter training through weekly and supplemental training meetings.

Ability to and knowledge of: CPR and first aid scope of practice; basic hand tools and automotive mechanics; basic safe work practices and procedures, basic operator standards. Ability to learn and follow county and department policies, rules and instructions. Apply firefighting and operator procedures; demonstrate mechanical aptitude required in the operation of firefighting equipment; react quickly and calmly to and exercise good judgment in responding to emergencies; exercise initiative in completing assignments; establish and maintain effective working relations with other department/agency representatives, co-workers, and the public; learn the fundamental legal and administrative policies related to fire safety and prevention; prepare written reports neatly using correct spelling and grammar; understand and carry out oral and written instructions and directions.
