Job description


Under the direction of the classroom teacher, performs a variety of basic non-instructional related duties to kindergarten. Assist teachers by working with individuals and/or small groups of students. Assists with classroom organizational and administrative tasks. Monitors classroom and hallways. Assists teachers with preparation of materials. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Responsibilities
Examples of Duties:
  • Assists in maintaining a safe and orderly learning environment. Enforces school safety rules and regulations. Greets, students. Assists students with routine procedures such as opening lockers, finding their names, arrival activities, and breakfast. Monitors students during bathroom breaks. Assist students with aspects of their toileting and self-care.
  • Assists the kindergarten teacher with administrative tasks such as the lunch count, attendance, and checking backpacks and folders.
  • Assists in maintaining discipline and encouraging appropriate student behavior, as modeled by the teacher. Monitors student behavior in halls, cafeterias, and other assembly areas.
  • Facilitates students' on-task behavior by providing reinforcement and refocusing prompts.
  • Redirects students who need assistance focusing.
  • Assists with the distribution of materials. Arranges center tables for activities. Sits with students.
  • Sets up materials for lessons. Records student responses on teacher-created data sheets. Provides non-instructional support for students needing assistance.
  • Facilitates and assists students at centers and snack. Encourages students to develop self-help skills.
  • Works with kindergarten students to reinforce skills as directed by the classroom teacher. Facilitate students' oral language development and social skills during centers, including reading to students and discussing the story.
  • Facilitates movement within the classroom and school environment. Facilitate children's play during gross motor periods. Accompanied students on curricular field trips.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
Education, Training, and Experience:
  • Possession of a high school diploma or its equivalent is preferred.
  • Experience working with an early childhood population is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Skill in verbal communications.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining interpersonal relationships.
  • Ability to provide assistance and support services to students.
  • Ability to follow and enforce safety and disciplinary rules.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, teachers, and other school personnel.

Physical and Environmental Conditions:
  • The work of this class entails physical activities such as frequent walking and standing, lifting and carrying, and related physical duties associated with assisting early childhood students.

FLSA: Non-exempt
Salary: $18 per hour

  • All people employed by the Baltimore County Public Schools, regular and temporary, are required to be fingerprinted and have a criminal background investigation (per COMAR) completed. The fee charged for fingerprinting is $109.
  • Anyone offered employment is required to provide proper identification and documentation of eligibility for employment in the US.
  • If you have military experience, you will be asked to provide a copy of DD214.
  • Official transcripts will be required upon hire and must be sent via e-script/clearinghouse from your university.
  • Some positions will require employees to undergo a physical examination and/or drug testing.
