What is a KiCad PCB layout designer?

A KiCad PCB layout designer is a professional who uses the open-source KiCad software suite to design printed circuit board (PCB) layouts. They create and optimize the physical arrangement of electronic components and the routing of electrical connections on the PCB, ensuring it meets both electrical and manufacturing requirements. Their work involves translating circuit schematics into manufacturable boards while considering signal integrity, component placement, and design rules. KiCad PCB layout designers are essential in the process of developing electronic products, from prototypes to production-ready boards.

What is the difference between Kicad Pcb Layout vs PCB Designer?

AspectKicad Pcb LayoutPCB Designer
CredentialsKnowledge of PCB design software, often self-taught or through coursesProfessional certification or degree in electronics or PCB design
Work EnvironmentDesigning PCB layouts using Kicad software, often in small teams or freelanceUsing specialized PCB design tools in corporate or manufacturing settings
Industry UsageHobbyist, prototyping, small-scale projectsCommercial product development, large-scale manufacturing

While both roles involve PCB layout design, Kicad Pcb Layout is typically associated with hobbyists and small projects using free software, whereas PCB Designer often refers to professionals working in industry with advanced tools and certifications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a KiCad PCB Layout Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a KiCad PCB Layout Designer, you need a solid background in electronic circuit design, PCB layout principles, and a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Proficiency with KiCad EDA software, version control systems, and familiarity with industry standards (such as IPC) are typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and effective communication with engineers and manufacturers are vital soft skills. These competencies ensure accurate, manufacturable, and reliable PCB designs that meet project requirements and timelines.

What are some common challenges faced when collaborating with hardware engineers as a KiCad PCB Layout Designer?

As a KiCad PCB Layout Designer, you'll often work closely with hardware engineers to translate schematics into manufacturable board layouts. Common challenges include managing last-minute design changes, resolving component placement constraints, and ensuring signal integrity in high-speed designs. Effective communication and a structured review process are key to addressing these issues, as well as staying updated on best practices in PCB design and DFM (design for manufacturability) requirements.

Job description

Description:

Electrical Technician – SensXR Development and Integration

Primary Work Location: On-site role with limited hybrid flexibility (minimum 3 days per week in office required).

Must be a U.S Citizen: Yes

Clearance: Ability to obtain and maintain active Secret clearance (PCL) and the ability to obtain a clearance up to Top Secret (PCL) if later needed.

Job Summary

Obsidian Solutions Group is seeking a hands-on, resourceful Electrical Technician to support the development, integration, and testing of the SensXR system—a modular, multi-threat detection platform. This role blends traditional electronics assembly with PCB design support, part selection, and prototyping. The ideal candidate will be comfortable working independently to move from schematic capture and PCB layout (KiCad/SPICE) through ordering, assembling, testing, and troubleshooting custom PCBs and subsystems.

While this position is structured as a technician role, success requires an individual who can take initiative, operate with minimal supervision, and bring creative, R&D-focused problem solving. This technician will directly influence prototype readiness and reliability, ensuring SensXR meets demanding performance standards for DoD CBRNE applications.

Responsibilities

Parts Research & Procurement

  • Identify, research, and evaluate electronic components using vendor catalogs (e.g., Digi-Key, Mouser).
  • Read datasheets to confirm specifications, pinouts, and integration requirements.
  • Maintain part libraries and BOMs, proposing alternatives when supply constraints occur.

Schematic & PCB Development

  • Assist with schematic capture and PCB layout using KiCad and SPICE-based tools, developing workable designs with minimal supervision.
  • Prepare fabrication and assembly files for outside PCB manufacturing services, ensuring compliance with engineering standards.
  • Coordinate orders for bare boards and/or assembled PCBs through contract manufacturers, monitoring quality and delivery timelines.

Assembly & Testing

  • Assemble, solder, and rework prototype PCBs and subsystems.
  • Perform unit tests, quality control, and performance benchmarking of custom electronics.
  • Troubleshoot independently using multimeters, oscilloscopes, and logic analyzers, escalating only when needed.

System Integration

  • Wire and integrate PCBs, sensors, and RF modules into SensXR subsystems.
  • Address ruggedization, EMI/EMC considerations, and field reliability requirements.
  • Support firmware bring-up and perform basic coding/debugging in Arduino IDE, working independently where required.

Prototyping & Field Validation

  • Build and adapt prototypes, cable assemblies, and enclosures.
  • Support lab and field tests of SensXR hardware, capturing logs and diagnostic data.
  • Provide structured feedback for iterative design improvements and system reliability.

Documentation & QA

  • Maintain accurate build/test documentation aligned with ISO 9001 processes.
  • Contribute to design reviews, documenting revisions and part traceability.
  • Ensure all assemblies meet workmanship standards (IPC/WHMA-A-620 preferred).
Requirements:
  • Associate degree in Electronics Technology, Mechatronics, or equivalent military/technical training.
  • 3+ years of hands-on electronics assembly, integration, and testing experience.
  • Experience with PCB design tools (KiCad preferred) and basic circuit simulation (SPICE).
  • Skilled in soldering, wiring, and crimping to industry standards.
  • Familiarity with Arduino IDE or similar environments for prototyping.
  • Ability to read/interpret electrical schematics and component datasheets.
  • Proficiency with test instruments (multimeter, oscilloscope, logic analyzer).
  • Ability to work independently, problem-solve, and deliver results with limited supervision.

Desired

  • Experience taking PCB designs from schematic through fabrication and validation.
  • Background with sensor integration (gas, RF, GPS, IMU, etc.).
  • Exposure to ruggedized/military electronics or wearable/AR-integrated systems.
  • IPC/WHMA-A-620, IPC-A-610, or equivalent soldering/assembly certification.
  • Creative, R&D-oriented problem solver with curiosity to explore new approaches.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

  • Hybrid role with on-site prototyping and test event support.
  • Must be comfortable working in lab environments and with hands-on instrumentation.

Travel Requirements

  • Travel up to 15% for field validation and test events.
