Position Overview
The primary responsibility of the Adjunct Faculty member is teaching. We are seeking adjunct instructors for the following course in the Certificate in Applied Genomics program at Keck Graduate Institute (KGI):
CAG 9010 Human Variation and Disease (Fall, 3 credit hours)
Course Description
In this course, executive education students will explore types of DNA variation found in the human genome, including single nucleotide (SNVs), copy number (CNVs), and structural variants (SVs), at both the individual and population scale. This course will discuss the impact of highly penetrant variants on human health, especially as it relates to rare diseases, and the impact of common variation on complex traits and diseases. Topics in this course will include the technologies used to detect DNA variants and to diagnose genetic disease in all types of clinical settings, from prenatal to adult, and the ethical considerations of genetic and genomic testing.
The successful candidate must share in the mission of KGI and the Riggs School of Applied Life Sciences Programs. An appreciation for an integrated, team-based approach to learning is especially desired. The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to use creative approaches to academic program development, have strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively and work effectively in a team environment. The Adjunct Faculty member reports directly to the Dean and works collaboratively with the Program Directors and other faculty.
Located in beautiful Claremont, California, Keck Graduate Institute is a member of the prestigious Claremont Colleges, a consortium of five undergraduate liberal arts colleges, two graduate institutions, and The Claremont Colleges Services, which provide shared institutional support services.
Education and Experience:
  • Must hold a master's degree, Ph.D. preferred
  • Experience with medical genetics and variant curation
  • Experience in online teaching
  • Experience in industry or academic research in clinical genomics
  • An ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Prior experience in teaching for active learning preferred.
  • Experience with the Canvas learning management system is a plus.

Hours, Classification, and Status:
This is a part-time, exempt, adjunct faculty position and is not eligible for benefits.
Schedules will vary depending on course assignments and the needs of the department or the Institute.
The base salary range for this position is $2,500 - $15,000 per semester, depending on credits per course.
Physical and Mental Requirements
Ability to maintain good concentration while dealing with interruptions; attention to details with emphasis on accuracy; capable of giving, receiving, and analyzing information, formulating work plans, and articulating goals and action plans. Sitting in a normal seated position for extended periods of time. Standing for extended periods of time. Ability to hear within normal parameters. Ability to bend and stoop (e.g., to file). Ability to move about. Ability to lift and carry short distances up to 20 lbs. (e.g., to lift or move office supplies, files, books, and packages). Ability to travel locally, depending on business needs.
