Description
Job Summary
This is a technical position within the Public Works Department with a wide variety of duties pertaining to vehicle and equipment operation to support Recycling Center operations.
The Operator I must have the ability to operate power tools, vehicles, and equipment, and perform manual tasks associated with collecting, unloading, and processing refuse and recycling materials from various sites within Boone County.
Major Essential Duties
  • Safely operate vehicles, production equipment, and trucks requiring a commercial driver license (CDL) to support recycling operations
  • Collect recycled materials from collection bins at various sites within Boone County
  • Safely operate Recycling Center equipment including balers, compactors, sorting line conveyance equipment, and truck/trailer-mounted bin collection systems
  • Continuously monitor the condition of vehicles and equipment to ensure safety and operational readiness
  • Support daily initiatives to clean, organize, and sustain a safe and orderly work environment
  • Load and unload finished recycling commodities by means of forklift operation within a loading dock facility at the Recycling Center
  • Basic computer skills to support data entry and inventory management
  • This person must have knowledge of County policies and recycling procedures
  • Ability to supervise inmates in accordance with the Boone County Jail Community Service Program guidelines
  • Excellent communication skills to interact with customers and team members

Minor Essential Duties
  • Assist with the Department's snow removal operations
  • Assist the Public Services Division with general maintenance of County infrastructure including roads, culverts, and vegetation management.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

  • None

  • The Operator performs duties within the Public Works Department, under the direct supervision of the Recycling Manager

Qualifications
Education and/or Experience
  • Graduate of a standard high school, vocational school or the equivalency, supplemented by experience or training which provides the desired knowledge, skills and abilities to perform required duties in the Solid Waste Services Division

Language Skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English both orally and in writing

Mathematical Skills
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measurement using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

Reasoning Skills
  • Defines problems, collects data, establishes facts, and draws valid conclusions
  • Interprets a variety of technical and instructional information
  • Makes decisions which serve the county's best interest and follows the missions and objectives of the Public Works Department

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
  • Possession of a valid Commonwealth of Kentucky driver's license
  • Ability to obtain CDL in the first six months of employment
  • Ability to obtain Commonwealth of Kentucky Solid Waste Certificates as needed
  • Must possess or obtain OSHA 30 certification within first six months of employment
  • Ability to obtain FEMA National Incident Management System (NIMS) certification in the following required courses within 6-months of employment:?
