Job description

BASIC FUNCTION:

Under the supervision of the Cook/Shift Supervisor; prepares vegetables, salads, potatoes, meats, and desserts along with ensuring quality meals for individuals served.   

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  •   Responsible for producing meats, vegetables, potatoes, soups, salads, and desserts in accordance with Milestone policy and recipes.  Temperatures must be maintained in accordance with Public Health standards.  Will prepare meals according to count, to avoid over producing.
  • Will help put food in food van. Will double check to make sure all food is on van (the van is to leave at 4:30 p.m).  Will deliver food items to clients; such as milk, juice, coffee, and bread and butter; at proper times and other times as necessitated.
  • Will deliver cold and hot foods to housing units at Elmwood Heights, Elmwood East  as well as special diets.
  • Will be responsible for preparing evening meal and assisting with all other food preparation. Will prepare snacks (pm and/or evening) as assigned.
  • Will prepare all diets as prescribed and outlined per Diet Manual. Will also prepare meals as required for individuals on specific diets as directed by Supervisor.
  • Must taste all prepared food and evaluate for quality & looks before serving.
  • Must take food temperature on a regular basis. Must record substitutions made and make food survey as needed.
  • Must clean all areas of kitchen, including washing pots and pans, sweeping and mopping as assigned and other cleaning as needed.
  • Will help train new Dietary employees under the supervision of the Supervisor.
  • Dress code Policy per Dietary Dept. Maintains dress code: no torn clothes, no tank tops or cut offs, no sleeve less shirts, no shorts.  Must wear sturdy shoes (no slippers or open sandals or shoes or keds).  Must wear apron, hat or hairnet while on duty.
  •  In compliance with the Milestone policy and procedures regarding Human Rights, intervenes immediately on behalf of the individual(s) served and reports to the appropriate agency (OIG, DCFS, IDPH) and/or supervisor.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Will be responsible for dishing up food as needed.
  • Reviews with Cook/Shift Supervisor and Food Services Director any dietary concerns.
  • Makes trips to vendors to purchase supplies if needed.
  • Responsible for inspection on homes for proper portion control when food is being served.
  • Will maintain strict confidentiality in carrying out responsibilities.
  • Will perform other duties as required or assigned by the Supervisor &/or Food Services Director.
  • Maintains standards of work schedule, health/safety, and sanitation.
  • Must be able to work extra hours and weekends if asked to do so.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be a high school graduate.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and good driving record.
  • Prefer one year's cooking experience.
  • Must successfully complete Department of Public Health Food Service Sanitation Manager Certification within first 12 months of full time employment.
  • May be required to lift 35 lbs.; anything over 35 lbs., they must ask for assistance before lifting.
