What is a kayak?

Kayaks are small, narrow watercraft that are typically propelled by means of a double-bladed paddle. Originally developed by indigenous peoples in the Arctic regions for hunting and transportation, kayaks are now widely used for recreation, sport, and adventure activities on rivers, lakes, and oceans. Modern kayaks come in various designs, including sit-in and sit-on-top styles, and are made from materials like plastic, fiberglass, or inflatable fabrics. They are popular for activities such as touring, whitewater paddling, fishing, and sea kayaking.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a kayak guide?

To thrive as a Kayak Guide, you need strong paddling skills, water safety knowledge, and typically certifications such as CPR, First Aid, and sometimes ACA or BCU instructor credentials. Familiarity with GPS devices, rescue equipment, and weather tracking systems is also important for guiding trips safely. Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving abilities help guides manage groups and respond to emergencies effectively. These skills and qualifications ensure guest safety, enhance the overall experience, and allow guides to handle challenging situations on the water.

What challenges do kayak tour guides face and how can they be addressed?

Kayak tour guides often encounter challenges such as managing groups with varying skill levels, unpredictable weather, and ensuring safety on the water. Effective communication, thorough pre-trip briefings, and contingency planning are essential for handling these issues. Guides must stay vigilant, adapt routes as needed, and foster teamwork among participants to create a positive and safe experience for everyone. Building strong rapport with guests and maintaining up-to-date safety certifications also contribute to successfully overcoming these challenges.

Job description

KAYAK, part of Booking Holdings (NASDAQ: BKNG), is the worldโ€™s leading travel search engine. With billions of queries across our platforms, we help people find their perfect flight, stay, rental car and vacation package. Weโ€™re also transforming business travel with a new corporate travel solution, KAYAK for Business.

As an employee of KAYAK, you will be part of a travel company that operates a portfolio of global metasearch brands including momondo, Cheapflights and HotelsCombined, among others. From start-up to industry leader, innovation is in our DNA and every employee has an opportunity to make their mark. Our focus is on building the best travel search engine to make it easier for everyone to experience the world.

We are looking for a strong Senior Java Software Engineer to implement new features and maintain KAYAKโ€™s world-leading platform. We are seeking for people who love working with data - parsing, analyzing, investigating, interpreting, modeling, and extracting knowledge from large volumes of data. Good candidates will have a passion in processing data to help drive better business decisions or to develop new features, in a fast-paced environment where many small and diverse projects are the norm.

This role will be required to work from our Concord, MA office at least 3 days per week.

In this role, you will:
  • Extract data from databases, write scripts to parse, clean, combine, and process them

  • Communicate with APIs via REST or SOAP interfaces.

  • Configure enterprise applications for large customers.

  • Develop tools to assist in the debugging of existing products.

  • Build and maintain high-performance integrations with thirdโ€‘party APIs (airlines, hotel and rentalcars providers)

  • Take full ownership of your designs: from initial concept to deployment while maintaining high standards for code quality and performance

  • Participate in code reviews and architectural steering to ensure the K4B project remains modular and reusable as KAYAK expands its enterprise footprint

Please apply if you have:
  • +6-8 years of experience with Java programming

  • Strong understanding of programming fundamentals, data structures, algorithms, and software design

  • Ability to work independently and with a team

  • Good communication skills for sharing ideas clearly with both technical and non-technical colleagues

  • Experience with relational databases like MySQL or Oracle

  • Prior experience in the travel domain is beneficial

  • Experience with B2B systems or identity/HR integrations is beneficial โ€” e.g., SCIM, SAML/OAuth, SSO, user provisioning/deprovisioning, and connecting HRIS/IDP platforms (Workday, Okta, Active Directory) to product services.

  • Experience with the following:

    • Unix shell scripting

    • Spring & Mybatis frameworks

    • DOM and using XPath, JQuery & CSS

    • API development using REST, Web Service, SOAP, etc

    • Machine Learning

Benefits and Perks
  • Work from (almost) anywhere for up to 20 days per year

  • Focus on mental health and well-being:

    • Company-paid therapy sessions through SpringHealth

    • Company-paid subscription to HeadSpace

    • Company-wide week off a year - the whole team fully recharges (and returns without a pile-up of work!)

    • No meeting Fridays

  • Paid parental leave

  • Generous paid vacation + time off for your birthday

  • Paid volunteer time

  • Focus on your career growth:

    • Development Dollars

    • Leadership development

    • Access to thousand of onโ€‘demand e-learnings

  • Travel Discounts

  • Employee Resource Groups

  • Competitive retirement and health plans

  • Free lunch 2 days per week

  • Fun quarterly events such as boat trips, arcades, ski trips, Thursday socials, and more

There are a variety of factors that go into determining a salary range, including but not limited to external market benchmark data, geographic location, and years of experience sought/required. The range for this Massachusetts based role is $125,000-140,000, not inclusive of annual bonus and recurring RSU grants.

We offer a competitive base salary and benefits including: health benefits; flexible spending account; retirement benefits; life insurance; paid time off (including PTO, paid sick leave, medical leave, bereavement leave, floating holidays and paid holidays); and parental leave benefits.
