Description
Powertrain Engineering Intern: Gearbox Performance Enhancement
Bring gearbox analysis and enhancement capability in-house to support KARMA's vehicle performance goals while reducing external ED&D costs through hands-on engineering analysis, modeling, and validation support.
Internship Details
  • Duration: 12 weeks
  • Timing: May/June start through August/September end
  • Schedule: Full-time (40 hours per week)

Responsibilities (include, but are not limited to):
  • Conduct research and teardown analysis of the existing gearbox, including review of CAD models, engineering drawings, specifications, and prior studies.
  • Develop analytical and computational gearbox models to evaluate performance, durability, and design tradeoffs, including:
    • Hand calculations
    • KISSsoft modeling
    • MATLAB-based analysis
  • Define baseline and enhanced duty cycles and assess component life, durability limits, and performance constraints.
  • Support evaluation of gearbox limitations, improvement opportunities, and design enhancement paths.
  • Develop engineering recommendations for performance improvements based on analytical findings.
  • Assist with test planning, instrumentation, and validation activities to correlate analytical models with real-world data.
  • Support correlation of models to test results to increase confidence in gearbox performance enhancement recommendations.
  • Collaborate with powertrain, test, and vehicle integration teams to support performance advancement initiatives.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:
  • Pursuing a bachelor's degree in one of the following fields: Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or Electrical Engineering.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Interest in powertrain systems, mechanical design, and engineering analysis.
  • Ability to work with technical data, engineering documentation, and modeling tools.
  • Effective communication skills and ability to work cross-functionally with engineering and test teams.

Preferred Qualification:
  • Coursework or project experience in mechanical design, powertrain systems, or drivetrain components
  • Exposure to gearbox fundamentals, gears, bearings, shafts, and durability analysis
  • Experience with engineering calculations and modeling tools (MATLAB preferred; KISSsoft a plus)
  • Familiarity with test instrumentation, validation planning, or data correlation
  • Interest in performance optimization and engineering tradeoff analysis

Compensation:
$25.00/per hour - $35.00/per hour. Compensation will vary depending on the candidate's current level of education.
At Karma, our base pay is one part of our total rewards package.
Compensation offered may vary on multiple factors, including market location, education, skills and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements dependent on the position being offered.
