San Jose, CA – Kaiser Permanente – Job Summary: The Orthopedic Technician is a specifically trained allied health care individual who assists all health care professionals in the practice of medicine. An Orthopedic Technician is an extension of the Orthopedic Surgeon and assists in the care of sick and disabled persons. Orthopedic Technicians need the ability to relate well to other people, be considerate of their conditions and be able to communicate with patients in understanding their anxieties and fears. The Orthopedic Technologist shall provide consultation, evaluation, treatment, and preventative care in accordance with the laws and regulations of the jurisdiction they practice. This position may be regularly assigned by the Employer to direct and check the work of one or more Orthopedic Technicians.

• Apply, adjust, and remove casts, assemble traction apparatus, and fit strappings and splints for orthopedic patients.
• Cover injured areas with protective materials such as stockinette bandages, gauze, or rubber pads as preparatory to cast application; utilize proper aseptic techniques in dressing changes and surgical field setup.
• Wet, wrap, and mold plaster bandages around fracture areas; trim plaster.
• Remove whole and broken casts; alter cast position to change the setting of the patient’s limb or body part as directed.
• Assemble wooden, metal, plastic, or plaster material to make orthopedic splints.
• Rig pulleys, ropes, and frames to assemble fracture beds.
• Attach traction supports to patient limb and adjust support to specified tension.
• Assemble exercise frames.
• Adjust crutches, canes, braces, and splints to fit the patient.
• Perform suture removal, staple removal, and dressing changes including boot application.
• Secure provider order before providing care.
• Instruct patients in care and assist them in walking with casts, braces, crutches, and other orthopedic apparatus and supplies as ordered.
• Document interventions in the medical record.
• Maintain supplies in the cast room and treatment rooms, including ordering and stocking materials.
• Assist in making follow‑up appointments and consultation appointments with specialists for patients.
• Follow up with clinical patients (calling patients and arranging follow‑up visits with the Orthopedic Technician).
• Serve as a technical advisor to hospital staff regarding orthopedic devices and equipment.
• Oversee Orthopedic Technician competency and procedural updates.
• Perform other related duties as required.
• Supervisory responsibilities: Motivate and provide work direction to other employees, without authority to hire, fire, or discipline.

• Must meet one of the following three qualifications:
  • Four (4) years of experience as an Orthopedic Technician (part‑time experience of twenty hours a week or more will be considered as full time) and certification by the National Board of Certification of Orthopedic Technologists.
  • At least five (5) years of experience as an Orthopedic Technician (part‑time experience of twenty hours a week or more will be considered as full time), documented graduation from an Orthopedic Technician training program, and demonstrated ability to perform the most complex techniques and procedures of the classification under general supervision.
  • Previously employed as a Sr. Orthopedic Technician with Kaiser Permanente on September 3, 2003, and not voluntarily transferred to another position or terminated and rehired.
• Education: High School Diploma or GED.
• License, Certification, Registration: Basic Life Support.
• Additional Requirements: Computer literate preferred; experience with automated clinical information systems preferred.
