Kafka Software Engineer information

Do software engineers use Kafka?

Yes, Kafka is commonly used by software engineers, especially those working in data engineering, distributed systems, or real-time data processing roles. Proficiency with Kafka often involves understanding message brokers, stream processing, and related tools like Apache Spark or Kafka Connect.

What engineers make $500,000?

Senior software engineers, including those working with technologies like Kafka, cloud infrastructure, or in specialized fields such as machine learning, can earn $500,000 or more annually, especially with extensive experience, advanced skills, and in high-demand industries or companies. Compensation often includes base salary, bonuses, and stock options, particularly in large tech firms or startups with significant funding.

What does a Kafka engineer do?

A Kafka engineer designs, develops, and maintains systems using Apache Kafka for real-time data streaming and processing. They configure Kafka clusters, optimize performance, and ensure data reliability, often working with related tools like Kafka Connect and Kafka Streams. Strong programming skills and knowledge of distributed systems are essential for this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Kafka Software Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Kafka Software Engineer, you need strong programming skills (often in Java, Scala, or Python), a solid understanding of distributed systems, and experience with Apache Kafka architecture and stream processing. Familiarity with tools like Kafka Connect, Kafka Streams, Zookeeper, and containerization platforms, along with certifications such as Confluent Certified Developer for Apache Kafka, are highly valued. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills help you design scalable solutions and collaborate across engineering teams. These technical and interpersonal skills are critical to building reliable, high-throughput data pipelines and ensuring seamless real-time data flow in modern applications.

What is the salary of Kafka?

A Kafka Software Engineer's salary typically ranges from $90,000 to $150,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and company size. Skilled professionals with knowledge of distributed systems and experience with Kafka, Kafka Streams, or related tools tend to earn higher salaries.

What are some common challenges Kafka Software Engineers face when building scalable streaming applications?

Kafka Software Engineers often encounter challenges related to ensuring high throughput, low latency, and fault tolerance when designing streaming data pipelines. Managing message ordering, handling data schema evolution, and optimizing partitioning strategies are critical for maintaining data consistency and performance. Additionally, engineers must monitor cluster health, address issues like consumer lag, and coordinate with DevOps and data engineering teams to ensure seamless integration with other systems.

What are Kafka Software Engineers?

Kafka Software Engineers are specialized software developers who design, build, and maintain systems that use Apache Kafka, a distributed event streaming platform. They create and manage data pipelines, ensure reliable message delivery, and optimize the performance of applications using Kafka. These engineers often work closely with data engineers, architects, and other developers to enable real-time data processing, analytics, and integration across various systems. Their role is crucial in organizations that rely on high-throughput, fault-tolerant data streams.

Job description

Department: Engineering

The Engineering organisation at Signifyd is at the forefront of building cutting-edge solutions that protect and empower global commerce. We pride ourselves on delivering highly scalable, robust systems that evolve with our customers' growing needs, from emerging startups to enterprise-level organizations processing millions of transactions. Our engineers thrive in an innovative, agile environment where rapid iteration and continuous learning drive our success. We embrace modern development practices, leverage cloud-native technologies, and maintain a customer-obsessed mindset that ensures our solutions not only meet today's requirements but also anticipate tomorrow's challenges. Strong partnerships with Product, Data Science and our business stakeholders ensure every technical decision is aligned with delivering maximum value to our customers and driving meaningful business outcomes.

-------------------------------------------

Signifyd is looking to hire a Senior Software Engineer for its Cloud Platform Engineering group. Within our broader Engineering organization, this pivotal role will drive the design, implementation, and comprehensive management of our enterprise cloud infrastructure. You will provide technical leadership to a team of highly skilled engineers, automating and maintaining a vast computing environment that supports our core decision platform for customers ranging from emerging startups to large-scale enterprises processing millions of transactions. Thriving in an innovative culture of rapid iteration and continuous learning, you will partner closely with cross-functional engineering teams to resolve complex infrastructure challenges and ensure technical decisions align with strategic business outcomes. To ensure seamless system operations, the ideal candidate will possess a software development skillset, strong analytical and communication skills, and deep technical proficiency across cloud technologies, containers, Kubernetes, cloud networking, security, and platform engineering

Responsibilities: Pioneer AI-Driven Infrastructure
  • Build the future: Architect and integrate LLM-powered, agentic tools into our platform ecosystem. You will design self-healing infrastructure and automated root-cause analysis workflows to drastically reduce operational toil and accelerate incident resolution.
Architect for Scale, Security, & Reliability
  • Evolve the ecosystem: Drive the strategic roadmap for our GCP and Kubernetes-based cloud capabilities, balancing direct developer feedback with emerging cloud technologies.
  • Drive operational excellence: Define, build, and maintain rigorous system Service Level Objectives (SLOs) and incident management processes. You will share ownership of platform health by participating in on-call rotations, using those frontline insights to continuously harden our systems.
  • Embed security: Design transparent platform security (access controls, encryption, vulnerability management) that keeps the platform secure without slowing down developer velocity.
  • Optimize footprint: Manage cloud capacity and FinOps proactively, offering efficient scaling solutions and cost transparency to engineering teams.
Elevate Developer Experience (DevEx)
  • Productize the platform: Transform CI/CD (GitHub Actions, TeamCity), deployment (ArgoCD), and build tooling into a cohesive, self-service product that drives Change Failure Rates (CFR) to zero.
  • Pave the golden path: Embed platform standards directly into our tooling so that the "right way" is automatically the fastest and easiest way for our software engineers.
Technical Leadership & Mentorship
  • Solve systemic problems: Provide high-level, solutions-oriented support by troubleshooting complex infrastructure issues and delivering resilient, product-level fixes.
  • Champion the culture: Foster a customer-focused engineering environment. You will mentor junior team members and advocate for product-thinking and deep empathy for the developer experience.
Requirements: Cloud & Infrastructure Mastery
  • Cloud Platform: Deep proficiency in Google Cloud Platform (GCP) is required; AWS experience is a strong plus. You have in-depth knowledge of cloud networking, protocols, and security best practices.
  • Kubernetes: Extensive expertise operating both self-managed and cloud-managed Kubernetes architectures at scale.
  • Data Systems: Experience managing and scaling robust data storage and streaming technologies (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL, Cassandra, Elasticsearch, Kafka).
Software Engineering & DevEx
  • Coding Proficiency: Strong software development skills in high-level languages (e.g., Python, Go, Java, TypeScript) combined with modern development practices.
  • IaC & GitOps: Proven ability to build secure, self-service infrastructure using Infrastructure-as-Code (Terraform) and declarative CI/CD pipelines (ArgoCD, GitHub Actions, TeamCity) to deploy with confidence and drive down CFR.
Observability & AI-Fluency
  • AI Tooling: Proficiency using modern AI-assisted development tools (Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Claude). Crucially, you possess the architectural critical thinking required to audit AI-generated code for security, correctness, and long-term maintainability.

Telemetry: Experience designing scalable, OpenTelemetry-based monitoring and tracing frameworks that equip engineering teams to swiftly pinpoint bottlenecks and lower MTTR.
