Wendell Phillips School 63 | Indianapolis, Indiana
ย

Kโ€“3 Instructional Coach

Academic Coaching | Grades Kโ€“3 | Full-Time, Salaried

1 Position Available | Salary: Competitive, Based on Experience & Licensure

Our Vision

At Matchbook Learning, our vision is simple: every child is known, loved, and flourishing. We are a tuition-free public charter school proudly rooted in the Haughville neighborhood of Indianapolis, serving Kโ€“8 students at Wendell Phillips School 63. Our students come with high needs and extraordinary potential โ€” and our staff shows up every day to meet both.

Half of our student population are Multilingual Learners. We serve students with a wide range of learning needs and we are proud to be in this community. Our coaches are at the center of making great instruction happen โ€” you will work alongside a visible, supportive leadership team, a strong network of teachers who want to grow, and a school community that is deeply invested in doing right by every child.

About This Role

We are looking for a Kโ€“3 Instructional Coach who understands what great early literacy and math instruction looks like โ€” and who has the skills, urgency, and professionalism to help teachers get there. This is not a compliance role. This is a coaching role: you observe, model, give clear action steps, follow up, and celebrate growth.

You will work shoulder-to-shoulder with Kโ€“3 classroom teachers every single day. You will bring data to every conversation. You will communicate a clear sense of urgency around Indiana's Kโ€“3 reading milestones โ€” especially IREAD-3 โ€” because you understand what is at stake if students don't get there.

You will be supervised by a Lead Coach and work as part of a collaborative coaching team committed to continuous improvement at every level.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct regular, structured classroom observations with clear coaching look-fors aligned to Tier 1 instructional expectations
  • Deliver direct, actionable, and growth-oriented feedback to Kโ€“3 teachers following every observation
  • Model lessons and co-teach alongside teachers when needed to demonstrate high-quality early literacy and math instruction
  • Lead data meetings using NWEA, IREAD, and formative assessment results to drive instruction and identify students needing intervention
  • Track teacher growth and student outcome data over time โ€” and use that data to adjust coaching priorities
  • Communicate a clear and consistent sense of urgency around Indiana Kโ€“3 reading milestones, including IREAD-3 expectations and consequences
  • Administer, interpret, and use Core Phonics Screener data to identify phonics gaps and inform intervention groupings
  • Administer, interpret, and use Acadience Reading (DIBELS) benchmark and progress monitoring data to track student literacy growth
  • Support implementation of reading intervention programs (e.g., UFLI, SIOP-aligned strategies) with fidelity
  • Collaborate with the Lead Coach, AP of Academics, and school leadership on school-wide instructional priorities
  • Facilitate professional development sessions and coaching cycles that are practical, relevant, and directly connected to classroom practice
  • Build trusting, professional relationships with teachers โ€” modeling the same growth mindset you expect from them
  • Maintain detailed coaching logs, observation records, and data tracking to support accountability and reflection
  • Support summer preparation and planning tasks as needed while working remotely; must be available and responsive during summer months
Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in Education or related field
  • Valid Indiana teaching license
  • Indiana Reading Endorsement โ€” required, non-negotiable
  • Minimum 3 years of successful Kโ€“3 classroom teaching experience
  • Demonstrated ability to coach, mentor, or lead adult learners
  • Deep knowledge of Indiana Kโ€“3 reading milestones, IREAD-3 standards, and early literacy best practices
  • Comfort with data analysis โ€” you can read a data report, explain what it means, and turn it into next steps
  • High level of professionalism, punctuality, and reliability โ€” you model what you expect
  • Strong communication skills โ€” clear, direct, warm, and solution-focused
  • Experience administering and interpreting the Core Phonics Screener โ€” required
  • Experience administering and interpreting Acadience Reading (DIBELS) โ€” required

Preferred:

  • Experience in an instructional coaching, literacy specialist, or curriculum leadership role
  • Familiarity with SIOP, UFLI, or other research-based reading frameworks
  • Experience working in a high-need, urban school community
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus
Professional Development & Support

At Matchbook Learning, coaches are invested in just as deeply as the teachers they serve. You will work within a professional structure that supports your growth and gives you the tools to do this work with confidence and impact.

  • Supervised by and in regular collaboration with the Lead Coach โ€” you will have a thought partner and support system
  • Access to school-wide data systems and real-time student progress monitoring
  • Participation in school-wide professional learning and leadership team meetings
  • SIOP-aligned frameworks and coaching tools provided โ€” you are not building from scratch
  • Opportunities for professional growth and continued learning in instructional leadership
  • PGP credits available for license renewal
You Will Not Go It Alone.

Our full leadership and support structure includes:

  • Lead Coach โ€” your direct supervisor and professional collaborator
  • Assistant Principal of Academics & Tier 1 Instructional Systems
  • Assistant Principal of Student Supports & Tier 3 Behavior
  • Two School Counselors
  • Director of Competency-Based Learning
  • Data & Assessment Coordinator
  • Dean of Students and Dedicated Restorative Team
  • MLL Director with dedicated ongoing language support
  • Large bilingual staff throughout the building
  • Two MLL Academic Specialists providing push-in support
  • Special Education Coordinator and a large, dedicated Special Education team
  • Instructional Assistant dedicated to producing and collecting materials for teachers
A Whole-Child School

All students Kโ€“8 at Matchbook Learning receive Music, Physical Education, PLTW (Project Lead The Way), and College & Career Readiness classes as part of their school day. Our students graduate eighth grade having already chosen a career pathway โ€” entering high school with purpose, direction, and skills ready for today's workforce. As a coach, you are helping build the foundation that makes all of that possible.

What We Offer

โœ“ Competitive salary based on experience & licensure

โœ“ Tuition reimbursement โ€” up to $2,500 per semester

โœ“ PGP credits for license renewal

โœ“ Fall break, winter break (2 weeks), spring break & summer

โœ“ 5% 401(k) match โ€” dollar for dollar, vested at 90 days

โœ“ 10 PTO days (prorated if mid-year start)

โœ“ July 4th week off (before, during, or after)

โœ“ Health & dental insurance

โœ“ $1,500 perfect attendance bonus

โœ“ Thanksgiving week fully off

โœ“ Remote/flexible summer schedule with on-call availability

Summer Schedule

Coaches work remotely for most of the summer with on-call availability. You will be expected to complete planning tasks, review data, and prepare for the upcoming school year. This is a professional role โ€” responsiveness and follow-through matter even in summer months.

What We Expect
  • An Indiana Reading Endorsement โ€” this is required, not preferred
  • Genuine comfort working with adults โ€” you know how to build trust, give hard feedback, and celebrate growth
  • Clear, direct, actionable coaching โ€” teachers leave every conversation knowing exactly what to work on next
  • A deep sense of urgency around Kโ€“3 reading milestones โ€” you understand what IREAD-3 means for a student's future and communicate that clearly
  • Professionalism and punctuality โ€” you are present, prepared, and consistent every single day
  • Love of data โ€” you use numbers to tell a story, drive decisions, and hold yourself accountable
  • A growth mindset โ€” you coach it in others because you live it yourself
  • Reliability โ€” teachers, administrators, and students count on you to follow through
