Job description

Description
Alta Planning + Design seeks an experienced Senior Web Developer (Web Developer III) to join the Web and Digital Studio within our TDM Marketing & Creative Services team. This role is ideal for a highly skilled, hands-on developer who can independently deliver complex websites, web applications, interactive and data-driven tools, and other digital products while collaborating closely with designers, marketers, GIS and data staff, planners, and project teams across the firm.
The Senior Web Developer will play a key role in expanding Alta’s digital capabilities by building reliable, accessible, and maintainable solutions across a range of technical environments. The role combines full-stack development, systems integration, technical problem-solving, QA/QC, and project collaboration, with opportunities to contribute to emerging digital services, data-intensive applications, and the continued evolution of Alta’s web and digital practice.

About Alta’s TDM Marketing & Creative Services Group
Alta’s Marketing & Creative Services team brings together strategists, marketers, designers, and digital developers to help clients communicate complex ideas, engage audiences, and inspire action. Our work spans branding, campaigns, communications, graphic design, digital strategy, websites, interactive tools, and technology-enabled experiences.
Within this team, the Web and Digital Studio supports web-based and digital products and services across Alta’s client portfolio. The team partners closely with Marketing & Creative Services staff as well as planners, engineers, GIS specialists, civic data analysts, and project teams across the firm to create digital solutions that support both client needs and Alta’s broader services. As our digital work expands, the team is increasingly working across full-stack development, data visualization, APIs and system integrations, marketing technologies, automation, GIS-enabled tools, and other emerging digital applications.

Day to Day
Production Work (70%)
  • Build and maintain full-stack websites, web applications, interactive dashboards, calculators, and internal tools, translating wireframes and design systems into responsive, high-performing interfaces
  • Create interactive experiences that let users explore data by geography, time, scenario, or demographics — presenting complex information through maps, charts, and narrative content
  • Integrate GIS data and web mapping platforms (ArcGIS Online/Portal, ArcGIS Feature Services, StoryMaps, Mapbox, or similar) into web products
  • Develop APIs, service integrations, and data-processing workflows using Python and frameworks like FastAPI, Flask, or Django
  • Connect web products to external databases, CRMs, CDPs, and marketing platforms such as Salesforce, HubSpot, or Ortto
  • Configure and extend platforms like ArcGIS StoryMaps/Experience Builder or Tableau as project needs require
  • Set up website analytics and measurement (Google Analytics, Google Tag Manager) and apply technical SEO and performance best practices
  • Implement and test accessibility best practices, including WCAG 2.1/2.2 AA standards

Collaboration & Coordination (15%)
  • Partner with web, graphic design, marketing, GIS, civic analytics, and planning teams to scope and deliver digital products
  • Coordinate with project managers, designers, and technical staff on requirements and delivery
  • Support deployment, hosting, and environment coordination alongside Alta's Web and Digital Studio Lead and IT
Peer Review, Testing & QA/QC (10%)
  • Review code and products for functionality, responsiveness, browser/device compatibility, accessibility, data accuracy, and security
  • Provide peer review and informal mentorship to other developers
Technical Leadership & R&D (5%)
  • Contribute reusable components, automation, and internal tools that improve team efficiency and quality
  • Explore new technologies and approaches to keep Alta's digital products at the leading edge

Qualifications
Required

This position requires a combination of skills, experience and education including, but not limited to
  • 5–8 years of professional web development experience, including a track record of independently delivering production web applications or data-driven digital products
  • Expert-level comfort with core development tooling: VS Code (or similar), Git/GitHub, Docker, WSL or macOS, and CI/CD workflows
  • Advanced experience with the modern front-end ecosystem — JavaScript, TypeScript, Node.js, CSS/SASS, and frameworks like Vue, Nuxt, Astro, or Vite
  • Working to advanced Python experience with frameworks such as FastAPI or Django; familiarity with PHP is a plus
  • Experience with geospatial/GIS web mapping platforms (ArcGIS, Mapbox, or comparable)
  • Familiarity with data visualization or dashboard tools like Tableau
  • Experience with design/prototyping tools such as Figma and Adobe Creative Cloud
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills — comfortable discussing technical topics with both technical and non-technical audiences
  • A genuine interest in sustainable transportation, active transportation, city planning, or related fields
  • Bachelor's or associate's degree in computer science or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Public-sector, planning, transportation, GIS, or other data-intensive application experience; WCAG accessibility certification.
