What is a junior web developer with no experience?

A Junior Web Developer with no experience is someone who is just starting their career in web development and typically has little to no professional work history in the field. They may have recently completed relevant education, coding bootcamps, or self-study programs, and possess foundational knowledge of web technologies like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. These individuals often seek entry-level positions to gain practical experience, build their portfolios, and learn from more experienced developers while contributing to real-world projects.

What does a junior web developer with no experience do?

As a junior web developer with no experience, you can find an entry-level role where you help manage a website, program and test applications, or otherwise develop content for both the front-end and the back-end of your system. As an entry-level employee, you may help manage relationships with a client and plan programming tasks under the supervision of an experienced web developer. Many companies use this position as an extended training period to help you learn more about their existing code and current needs, so your main job is to learn whatever you can as you prepare to continue your career.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a junior web developer with no experience?

To thrive as a Junior Web Developer with no experience, foundational knowledge of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript is essential, often gained through self-study, bootcamps, or relevant coursework rather than formal work history. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, basic understanding of responsive design, and exposure to frameworks such as React or Bootstrap are highly beneficial. Initiative, problem-solving ability, eagerness to learn, and effective communication help set candidates apart in collaborative development environments. These skills and qualities are crucial for adapting to fast-changing technologies, contributing to team projects, and building a strong foundation for career growth.

What kinds of projects or tasks can a junior web developer with no experience expect to work on in their first role?

As a Junior Web Developer with no prior experience, you will likely start by working on smaller tasks such as fixing bugs, updating website content, or creating simple web pages under the guidance of more senior developers. You may also assist with testing, documentation, and basic front-end or back-end coding as you become familiar with company workflows and coding standards. This hands-on exposure helps you build technical skills and learn how to collaborate within a development team. Over time, as you demonstrate proficiency, you may be given more complex assignments and opportunities to contribute to larger projects.

Summary of Position

We're looking for a Web Developer who is passionate about building modern, high-performance websites and digital experiences using Next.js and React.

You'll work as part of a product-focused Agile team delivering digital experiences powered by a headless CMS. We're looking for someone who enjoys solving business problems, collaborating with stakeholders across the organization, and taking ownership of features from concept through deployment.

The ideal candidate is confident working independently, communicates effectively with both technical and non-technical teams, and is comfortable representing engineering in discussions with Product, Marketing, Content, Design, and external development partners.

This role is primarily focused on front-end development, with opportunities to collaborate closely with our back-end engineers working in Azure and C#.

What You'll Do
  • Build modern web applications using Next.js, React, and TypeScript.
  • Develop reusable, responsive, and accessible UI components.
  • Integrate and manage content from a headless CMS, preferably Storyblok.
  • Consume REST APIs to deliver dynamic user experiences.
  • Partner closely with Product Managers, Designers, Marketing, Content teams, QA, and external development agencies to deliver customer-focused solutions.
  • Participate in stakeholder discussions to understand business requirements, ask thoughtful questions, and translate business needs into technical solutions.
  • Take ownership of features from planning through deployment, ensuring high-quality outcomes with minimal supervision.
  • Participate in Agile ceremonies including planning, stand-ups, backlog refinement, and retrospectives.
  • Optimize applications for performance, accessibility, SEO, and Core Web Vitals.
  • Troubleshoot production issues and continuously improve application quality.
  • Write clean, maintainable, and well-documented code.
  • Share ideas, contribute to technical discussions, and help foster a collaborative engineering culture.
What We're Looking For Required
  • Minimum of 3 years of professional front-end development experience.
  • Strong experience with Next.js, React, and TypeScript.
  • Experience working with a headless CMS.
  • Solid understanding of HTML5, CSS3, and responsive design.
  • Experience integrating REST APIs.
  • Proficiency with Git and modern development workflows.
  • Experience working in Agile/Scrum teams.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Comfortable working directly with business stakeholders and explaining technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to manage priorities and deliver results while working independently in a remote environment.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the confidence to make decisions and take ownership of work.
  • Collaborative mindset with the ability to build positive relationships across technical and non-technical teams.
Preferred
  • Experience with Storyblok.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Azure.
  • Working knowledge of C# and ASP.NET Core APIs.
  • Experience integrating Salesforce data into front-end experiences.
  • Experience with Azure DevOps or GitHub Actions.
  • Understanding of authentication technologies such as OAuth and OpenID Connect.
  • Experience with analytics platforms such as Amplitude or Google Analytics.
  • Knowledge of SEO, accessibility (WCAG), and Core Web Vitals.
What Success Looks Like
  • Build trusted relationships with Product, Marketing, Content, Design, and IT teams.
  • Communicate proactively, raising risks and proposing solutions early.
  • Deliver high-quality features that improve customer experience and business outcomes.
  • Balance technical excellence with pragmatic delivery.
  • Demonstrate ownership, accountability, and a continuous learning mindset.
