Job Summary
The Junior Camp Support team member assists with daily camp operations, camper supervision, activity setup, meal support, cleaning, and general camp duties under the direction of camp leadership. This role helps create a safe, welcoming, and well-organized environment for campers and staff.
This is a non-exempt hourly position subject to California wage and hour laws, including overtime, meal periods, rest breaks, and accurate timekeeping requirements.
Junior Camp Support staff do not serve as the primary supervisor for campers unless specifically assigned and trained to do so. All work must be performed under the supervision of designated camp leadership.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Camper Support & Supervision
  • Assist counselors and leadership with camper check-in, transitions, and group movement.
  • Help maintain safe camper supervision during activities, meals, and free time.
  • Support positive camper engagement and inclusion.
  • Redirect minor behavior concerns to lead staff when needed.

Activity & Program Support
  • Assist with setup, operation, and cleanup of camp activities.
  • Prepare supplies, materials, and equipment for daily programming.
  • Help maintain activity areas in a clean and safe condition.
  • Support special events, worship programs, and camp-wide activities.

Meal & Hospitality Support
  • Assist with meal service, snack distribution, and dining area cleanup.
  • Help maintain sanitary food service and common areas.
  • Restock supplies as needed.

Cleaning & Camp Operations
  • Maintain cleanliness of cabins, bathrooms, common spaces, and activity areas.
  • Assist with trash removal and sanitation procedures.
  • Support laundry, inventory, and basic maintenance tasks as assigned.
  • Report facility issues or safety concerns promptly.

Safety & Compliance Responsibilities (California)
Safety & Duty of Care
  • Follow all camp safety policies, emergency procedures, and supervision protocols.
  • Immediately report hazards, injuries, illnesses, or incidents to supervisors.
  • Help maintain a safe camp environment at all times.
  • Use equipment only as trained and authorized.

Mandated Reporter Responsibility
  • Comply with the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA), if designated as a mandated reporter by role or assignment.
  • Complete required training before working with campers, as applicable.
  • Immediately report suspected abuse or neglect according to camp procedures and legal requirements.

Workplace Safety (Cal/OSHA)
  • Follow Cal/OSHA workplace safety standards.
  • Use proper lifting, cleaning, and sanitation procedures.
  • Wear required protective equipment when applicable.
  • Notify supervisors of unsafe conditions promptly.

Required Qualifications
  • Minimum age: 16 years old (18+ preferred for broader responsibilities).
  • High school student, high school diploma, or equivalent preferred.
  • Ability to work well with children, teens, and staff.
  • Strong teamwork, communication, and reliability.
  • Ability to follow directions and camp procedures.

Certifications / Clearances Required
  • CPR/First Aid certification preferred (or willingness to obtain if required).
  • Any camp-specific safety training required before start date.

Work Hours & California Compliance
  • Non-exempt hourly position.
  • Eligible for overtime in accordance with California law.
  • Meal periods and paid rest breaks provided as required by California law.
  • All hours worked must be accurately recorded.
  • Minors must comply with California child labor laws, including work permits, restricted hours, and break requirements.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and assist with camp tasks for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 30-40 lbs. safely.
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to respond quickly in emergency situations.
