Job description

LAPORTE is seeking a Building Mechanical Engineer with at least 5 years of relevant experience to join its team in Calgary, AB. Our engineer will contribute to design activities and provide guidance to junior engineers and designers in building mechanics, while collaborating on the execution of complex projects in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and food sectors.

The Mechanical Engineer and have experience in developing conceptual, preliminary and detailed designs, drawings, and specifications for the following disciplines:

  • HVAC systems
  • Dust collection
  • Chilled water systems
  • Heating water systems
  • Steam sytems
  • Compressed air systems
  • Controls
  • Plumbing

Responsibilities:

  • Design and prepare detailed plans and specifications for building mechanical systems in compliance with energy efficiency principles and standards including; HVAC, hydronic and steam systems design
  • Prepare engineering studies and schematic designs for new systems and analyze the operation of existing systems.
  • Conduct surveys of existing installations, improve current systems, and develop new solutions while considering existing infrastructure.
  • Estimate construction budgets for building mechanical systems.
  • Participate in site supervision and provide services during construction.
  • Manage projects and ensure successful delivery for MEP projects. Assess the requirements of projects, break them into tasks, and work with the Project Managers to determine the scope of work, budget, and staffing.
  • Develop client relationships to fully understand their needs.
  • Contribute to the technical quality of deliverables and interdisciplinary coordination.
  • Contribute to the training and growth of the Mechanical team
  • Manage and quality review of deliverables and project execution
  • Write the scope of work for mechanical or utility design based on preliminary review and meetings with the clients.

Key Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering
  • Current P.Eng registration with EGBC, APEGA or APEGS
  • Experience in engineering consulting in the food and beverage manufacturing or pharmaceutical manufacturing industries, (an asset)
  • 5+ years of design engineering experience
  • Knowledge of HVAC system design and experience with central utilities including steam, chilled water and compressed air systems.
  • Design of material handling and dust collection systems(an asset)
  • Proficiency in using the Microsoft Office Suite, AutoCAD, Revit.
