Junior Surface Pattern Design information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a junior surface pattern designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Junior Surface Pattern Designer, you need a strong background in illustration, color theory, and design principles, often supported by a degree in graphic design, textile design, or a related field. Proficiency with digital design tools such as Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop is typically required, along with knowledge of repeat patterns and print production processes. Creativity, attention to detail, and the ability to accept feedback are essential soft skills that help in developing appealing and marketable designs. These skills and qualities are crucial for producing high-quality patterns that meet client briefs and succeed in competitive design markets.

What is the difference between Junior Surface Pattern Design vs Junior Textile Designer?

CredentialsPortfolio, relevant design educationPortfolio, textile design courses
Work EnvironmentDesign studios, freelance, or in-house teamsTextile mills, fashion brands, or interior design firms
Industry UsageFashion, home decor, product packagingFashion, home furnishings, technical textiles

Junior Surface Pattern Design and Junior Textile Designer roles share similar skills and work environments, often requiring portfolios and design education. However, surface pattern designers focus on creating repeat patterns for various products, while textile designers work specifically on fabric designs. Both roles are integral to the textile and fashion industries, with overlapping responsibilities but distinct end products.

What are some common challenges faced by junior surface pattern designers when working on client projects?

Junior surface pattern designers often encounter challenges such as interpreting client briefs accurately and balancing creativity with specific brand guidelines. You may also need to adapt your style to fit various products or printing techniques, which can require quick learning and flexibility. Effective communication with team members, such as product developers and marketing staff, is essential to ensure your designs align with production capabilities and market trends. Feedback and revisions are common, so being receptive and adaptable is key to success in this role.

What is a junior surface pattern designer?

A Junior Surface Pattern Designer is an entry-level professional who creates decorative designs and prints that are applied to various surfaces, such as textiles, wallpapers, packaging, and products. They typically work under the supervision of senior designers, assisting with developing patterns, refining artwork, and preparing files for production. This role involves a strong understanding of color, repeat patterns, and current design trends, as well as proficiency in design software like Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop. Junior Surface Pattern Designers often collaborate closely with product developers, manufacturers, and marketing teams to ensure their designs fit the intended use and brand aesthetic.

Job description

Key Responsibilities
  • Own delivery of the micro-frontend strategy, including module boundaries, shared shell, and Webpack & Module Federation setup across teams.

  • Define the UI design system - component libraries, design tokens, and how they're sourced from Figma and propagated to code.

  • Set standards for state management across React applications (web and mobile) and for CSS architecture at scale.

  • Own accessibility (ARIA) compliance delivery across all portal surfaces.

  • Define UI performance budgets and drive performance/error monitoring rollout in production.

  • Direct authentication/authorization delivery for UI surfaces using OAuth/OIDC, and enforce OWASP web security standards.

  • Set the A/B testing approach and the containerization & deployment pattern for UI services.

  • Define the test automation strategy (Playwright) and quality gates for UI releases.

  • Run day-to-day delivery of the offshore senior developer team: sprint commitments, code review, real-time unblocking, and hands-on work on critical or time-sensitive pieces.

  • Report delivery status, risks, and blockers to engineering leadership.

Must-Have Qualifications
  • 8+ years in front-end engineering, with 3+ years as a tech lead owning end-to-end delivery of large-scale web applications (not a pure design/review architect role).

  • Expert, architecture-level command of React (web and mobile) and Node.js/TypeScript.

  • Proven design experience with Webpack, Module Federation, and micro-frontend architecture in production at scale.

  • Strong grounding in state management patterns (Redux, Context, signals, or equivalent) and when to use each.

  • Experience architecting a UI design system (component libraries, design tokens) and working with design tooling (Figma) hand-off workflows.

  • Deep knowledge of ARIA/accessibility standards (WCAG) and how to enforce them at the platform level.

  • Strong CSS architecture experience (design-system-driven styling at scale, not just component-level CSS).

  • Proven ability to define and enforce UI performance measurement and optimization strategy.

  • Solid understanding of OAuth/OIDC and OWASP web security practices for front-end applications.

  • Experience architecting containerized UI deployment pipelines.

  • Financial-services or regulated-industry experience preferred given security/compliance stakes.

  • Strong stakeholder communication; able to directly manage day-to-day delivery of an offshore team (standups, unblocking, sprint accountability).

  • Proven track record of shipping large-scale UI platforms on committed timelines, including hands-on troubleshooting under delivery pressure.

Nice-to-Have Qualifications
  • Experience designing UI A/B testing frameworks.

  • Familiarity with Playwright or comparable UI test automation frameworks at an architectural level.

  • Experience with error-monitoring platforms (Sentry, Datadog RUM, or similar) at a design level.

  • Exposure to mobile-specific micro-frontend or module-federation patterns.

  • Relevant certifications or contributions to open-source design systems.
    Compensation, Benefits and Duration
    Minimum Compensation: USD 56,000
    Maximum Compensation: USD 196,000
Compensation is based on actual experience and qualifications of the candidate. The above is a reasonable and a good faith estimate for the role.
Medical, vision, and dental benefits, 401k retirement plan, variable pay/incentives, paid time off, and paid holidays are available for full-time employees.
This position is not available for independent contractors
No applications will be considered if received more than 120 days after the date of this post
