What does a junior structural engineer do?

A Junior Structural Engineer assists in designing, analyzing, and evaluating structures such as buildings, bridges, and other infrastructure. They work under the supervision of more experienced engineers, preparing drawings, calculations, and reports. Their responsibilities often include site visits, reviewing construction materials, and ensuring compliance with safety and building codes. This role is ideal for recent engineering graduates who are looking to gain practical experience and work towards professional licensure.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a junior structural engineer?

To thrive as a Junior Structural Engineer, you need a solid background in civil or structural engineering principles, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with structural analysis software such as AutoCAD, SAP2000, or ETABS, and progress toward EIT or FE certification, is often required. These competencies ensure safe, efficient, and compliant structural designs and contribute to successful project delivery.

What are some common challenges faced by junior structural engineers when starting their careers?

Junior Structural Engineers often encounter challenges such as interpreting complex design codes, managing time across multiple projects, and effectively communicating technical details to senior engineers and other stakeholders. Adjusting to the fast-paced nature of the construction industry and learning to balance fieldwork with office-based design tasks can also be demanding. However, many organizations support new engineers with mentorship, training sessions, and collaborative team environments to help them overcome these challenges and grow professionally.

About Strescon Limited

For over 60 years, Strescon Limited has been a leader in precast and prestressed concrete manufacturing throughout Atlantic Canada and the Northeastern United States. As the largest precast/prestressed concrete manufacturer in Eastern Canada, we deliver innovative structural and architectural concrete solutions that support major infrastructure, commercial, industrial, and institutional projects.

At Strescon, our engineers play a key role in bringing complex projects from concept to completion. We foster a collaborative environment where technical expertise is valued, innovation is encouraged, and professional growth is supported.

We are currently seeking a Senior Structural Engineer (P.Eng.) to join our Engineering team. This role is ideal for an experienced engineer who enjoys solving complex structural challenges, leading technical projects, mentoring others, and helping shape the future of our engineering team.

Job Summary

As a Senior Structural Engineer, you will provide technical leadership in the design and delivery of precast and prestressed concrete systems while supporting the continued growth and development of junior engineering staff. You will work closely with project managers, estimators, production teams, contractors, architects, and consultants to ensure successful project execution from design through construction.

This role offers the opportunity to influence engineering best practices, contribute to strategic initiatives, and play an important role in developing the next generation of engineering talent at Strescon.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the structural analysis and design of precast and prestressed concrete components and systems.
  • Prepare and review engineering calculations, technical reports, design packages, and project documentation.
  • Ensure designs comply with applicable building codes, engineering standards, and project specifications.
  • Collaborate with clients, architects, contractors, consultants, and internal teams to develop practical and cost-effective engineering solutions.
  • Provide technical guidance throughout all phases of project execution, from proposal and design through fabrication and installation.
  • Review and approve engineering work completed by junior engineers and designers.
  • Mentor and support the development of Engineers-in-Training (EITs), junior engineers, and technical staff.
  • Assist in establishing engineering standards, design processes, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Participate in project planning, risk assessment, and problem resolution for complex engineering challenges.
  • Conduct site visits and provide technical recommendations as required.
  • Stay current with industry trends, evolving codes, and advancements in precast concrete technology.

What You Bring

Technical Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation in good standing.
  • Minimum 4+ years of structural engineering experience, preferably within construction, manufacturing, consulting, or infrastructure sectors.
  • Strong knowledge of structural analysis, structural design principles, and applicable building codes.
  • Experience designing reinforced concrete structures; precast/prestressed concrete experience is strongly preferred.
  • Proficiency with structural analysis and design software such as ETABS, SAP2000, SAFE, STAAD Pro, RISA, or similar platforms.
  • Experience reviewing engineering deliverables and providing technical direction to project teams.
  • Experience in project leadership, mentoring, or team supervision is considered a strong asset.

Leadership & Professional Skills

  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Proven ability to lead multiple projects while balancing competing priorities.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor, coach, and develop junior team members.
  • Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Commitment to quality, safety, and continuous improvement.
  • Collaborative leadership style with a focus on team success.

Why Join Strescon?

When you join our team, you'll benefit from:

  • A respected engineering team with deep expertise in precast and prestressed concrete design.
  • Opportunities to mentor and develop emerging engineering talent.
  • A collaborative culture where ideas are welcomed and technical excellence is valued.
  • Ongoing professional development and career growth opportunities.
  • Competitive compensation and comprehensive benefits.
  • Health and dental coverage, life insurance, RRSP and TFSA savings options.
  • Health and wellness initiatives that support employee well-being.
  • Educational scholarships for employees' dependents.
  • Team celebrations, employee recognition programs, and company-wide events.
