Junior Structural Designer information

What is a junior structural designer?

Junior Structural Designers are entry-level professionals who assist in designing and analyzing structures such as buildings, bridges, and other infrastructure. They work under the supervision of senior engineers or designers, helping to prepare drawings, models, and calculations using design software. Their role involves supporting project planning, ensuring compliance with safety standards, and learning industry best practices. Typically, Junior Structural Designers have a degree in civil or structural engineering, and they use their technical knowledge to contribute to the development of safe and efficient structures.

What types of projects and responsibilities can a junior structural designer expect in their first year?

As a Junior Structural Designer, you will typically work on a variety of projects ranging from small residential buildings to portions of larger commercial or infrastructure developments. Your responsibilities often include assisting with drafting structural plans, performing basic calculations under supervision, and ensuring that designs comply with relevant codes and standards. You’ll collaborate closely with senior engineers and architects, attend project meetings, and occasionally visit construction sites to observe how your designs are implemented. Early on, the focus will be on learning company protocols and software, gradually taking on more complex tasks as you gain experience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a junior structural designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Junior Structural Designer, you need a solid understanding of engineering principles, basic structural analysis, and a relevant degree such as civil or structural engineering. Proficiency in technical tools like AutoCAD, Revit, and structural analysis software, along with knowledge of building codes, is typically required. Attention to detail, effective communication, and a willingness to learn from experienced engineers are standout soft skills. These abilities ensure accurate designs, smooth project collaboration, and adherence to safety and regulatory standards.

What is the difference between Junior Structural Designer vs Structural Engineer?

This position can be located in any of our Canadian offices, with preference for our Alberta and British Columbia locations.
Your Impact
You'll prepare structural design calculations, engineering specifications, material take-offs (MTOs), and technical deliverables in accordance with project requirements, applicable codes, and industry standards.
You'll support project planning, scheduling, and budget tracking activities while contributing to the successful delivery of project milestones.
You'll assist in developing practical engineering solutions to technical challenges and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives across projects and processes.
You'll collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to support the design and execution of energy infrastructure projects, including renewable energy and power generation facilities.
You'll participate in structural and civil engineering design activities for a variety of facilities and infrastructure, including concrete foundations, piling systems, and steel structures.
You'll conduct site visits, inspections, and field assessments as required to support design development, construction, and commissioning activities.
You'll prepare technical reports, calculations, design packages, work plans, and tender documentation to support project delivery.
You'll coordinate with designers, drafters, and technical support staff to ensure project requirements are clearly communicated and executed.

You'll contribute to quality assurance and quality control processes, helping to ensure the accuracy, consistency, and integrity of project deliverables.
You'll review engineering documents and drawings for technical accuracy and compliance with applicable codes, standards, and project requirements.
You'll support the development of junior team members by sharing knowledge, providing guidance, and participating in peer reviews when appropriate.
You'll communicate effectively with project teams and stakeholders, responding to technical inquiries and supporting the successful delivery of project objectives.

Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in the province of residence, or eligible for registration.
5+ years of relevant experience in civil and structural engineering design, preferably within the energy, power generation, renewable energy, industrial, or heavy infrastructure sectors.
Experience in the analysis and design of steel structures, concrete foundations, piling systems, and related civil/structural works.
Demonstrated experience using structural analysis and design software such as SAP2000, S-FRAME, STAAD.Pro, Dyna 6, or similar applications.
Experience with dynamic and seismic analysis of structures and machine foundations, including vibration assessment and design for rotating and reciprocating equipment.
Knowledge of Python programming and API integrations/interfaces for engineering automation, data analysis, and workflow optimization would be considered an asset.

Strong understanding of applicable Canadian and international design codes, standards, and industry best practices related to steel, concrete, and foundation design.
