The Junior Software Engineer will work closely with the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) and other partners to help modernize legacy oceanographic systems by transitioning them into a scalable, event-driven microservices architecture. This is an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience with modern tech stacks, distributed systems, and rigorous Agile software development practices in a defense environment.

Job Duties:

  • Develop, test, and maintain containerized microservices that process real-time sensor data.

  • Assist in building web-based user interfaces and dashboards for the new Command and Control (C2) suite.

  • Write and execute database queries, assisting with the migration of legacy system data to a unified PostgreSQL environment.

  • Follow standard Git workflows, ensuring all code commits are tied to documented Agile issues and epics.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams to troubleshoot system bottlenecks and implement scalable solutions.

  • Write comprehensive unit and integration tests to ensure system reliability.

Required Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience).

  • U.S Citizenship with the ability to obtain and maintain a Security Clearance

  • Foundational software development experience (such as internships, academic projects, or self-directed portfolios).

  • Proficiency in at least one primary programming language used for backend or web development (e.g., Python, Java, JavaScript/TypeScript).

  • Understanding of relational databases and SQL (PostgreSQL preferred).

  • Familiarity with version control systems, specifically Git.

  • Strong problem-solving skills and a collaborative mindset.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with messaging brokers or event-driven architecture.

  • Active security clearance

  • Familiarity with Agile frameworks and collaborative development platforms (e.g., GitHub, GitLab, or similar tools).

  • Basic understanding of geospatial data or web-based mapping applications.
