Hatch is currently seeking a highly motivated  Geotechnical Engineer to join our Project Delivery Group (PDG) in our St. John’s and Halifax offices. Hatch’s PDG – Geotechnical Group undertakes investigations, studies, and detailed design as part of our geotechnical services for all types of mining, energy, and infrastructure projects. The geotechnical group is a global practice providing geotechnical and geological expertise to Hatch's business units. Our capability spans through the whole project lifecycle, comprising scoping, conceptual design, pre-feasibility and feasibility studies, basic and detailed engineering, construction, and project management.

As the successful candidate, you will: 

  • Be given opportunities to work on interesting and technically complex geotechnical projects and collaborate with diverse teams locally, nationally, and globally
  • Benefit from formal and informal mentorship from some of the leading authorities in the industry
  • Participate in professional development programs and networking opportunities to develop your skills
  • Scope and manage geotechnical site investigations
  • Prepare site characterization and geotechnical investigation reports.
  • Interpret field data to develop geotechnical and geological models
  • Complete 2D and 3D computational modeling
  • Complete geotechnical analysis and design (e.g., shallow and deep foundations, retaining walls, embankments and cut/fill slopes, soil improvements, etc.). Experience with dam safety design and analysis, DSRs, DSIs, dam breach and classification studies would be considered a significant asset
  • Prepare technical memos and geotechnical reports
  • Prepare technical specifications
  • Review the work of junior engineers and provide peer review for geotechnical reports
  • Prepare project execution plans and proposals
  • Support business development opportunities

You bring to the role:

  • A degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering (geotechnical focus), or Geological Engineering from an accredited university
  • A minimum of 6 years’ relevant geotechnical experience
  • Registered or eligible to register with PEGNL/APENS
  • Work well in a team with an excellent client focus in a multi-disciplinary environment
  • Leadership skills with proven ability to mentor junior staff
  • Willingness to undertake short term assignments out of office
  • A strong focus on both safety and quality
  • Demonstrated geotechnical experience with energy, mining, and/or infrastructure projects locally
  • Demonstrated experience in managing and executing field investigations
  • Experience using geotechnical software packages, e.g., GeoStudio, Rocscience, Plaxis, OpenGround, Leapfrog, etc.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks
  • Ability to prepare clear and concise reports
  • Ability to liaison with prospective clients and prepare proposals
