At CBCL Limited, we are a successful, dynamic, growing engineering and environmental consulting firm.We have an exciting opportunity for a Structural Bridge Engineer to join our dynamic team based in either Halifax, NS, Fredericton, NB, or St. John's, NL. You'll play a pivotal role in enhancing the infrastructure that connects our communities, all while being part of a team that includes university guest lecturers, CHBDC technical sub-committee members, and contributors to award-winning civil infrastructure projects.


As our ideal candidate, you have expertise in all areas of Bridge Engineering and are excited to lead young teams to produce quality work, while also leaning on the support of other experienced members of CBCL's Bridge Group.

Your Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead: Act as Project Manager, Structural Lead, and Designer for a diverse range of bridge projects, guiding them from initial concept through to completion;
  • Innovate: Work with teammates to develop bespoke designs, new tools and efficient workflow utilizing computer programming, AI and advanced analysis software;
  • Mentor and Inspire: Lead and mentor engineering teams while fostering a collaborative atmosphere and coordinating work with our in-house disciplines, including but not limited to geotechnical, highway, civil, water resources, coastal, environmental, cost estimation, climate change, mechanical and electrical;
  • Drive Business Growth: Engage in business development activities, including proposal preparation and client interactions, to support and expand our service offerings;
  • Provide On-Site Expertise: Visit project sites to collect essential data, assess existing structures, and oversee project progress during and after construction;
  • Craft and Refine: Prepare and review technical reports, tender documents, and cost estimates, ensuring precision and adherence to current design codes and standards; and
  • Uphold Excellence: Oversee the development of contract documents and perform quality checks on deliverables to maintain our high standards.

Other Related Duties as Required:

  • Engage with universities and contribute to our academic partnerships;
  • Present at conferences and share your knowledge through papers and presentations;
  • Develop and refine tools and workflows that enhance our team's efficiency; and
  • Explore and propose new business markets for our Bridge Group.


Your Capabilities and Credentials:

  • Educational and Professional Credentials: A Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering is required, with registration or eligibility for registration with provincial Engineering Associations;
  • Experience: Minimum five years of structural engineering experience for intermediate candidates, with a minimum of three years specifically in bridge engineering; or ten years of structural engineering experience for senior candidates, including at least five years focused on bridge engineering;
  • Technical Expertise: In-depth knowledge of bridge design and constructability, with proficiency in current design codes, including the CHBDC (CAN/CSA S6), ensuring high-quality engineering solutions;
  • Skilled in Inspection: Bridge inspection experience with a strong understanding of material conditions and defects;
  • Design Proficiency: Demonstrated expertise in designing both concrete and steel bridges for short and medium spans, ensuring structural integrity and compliance with relevant standards;
  • Collaborative Communicator: Strong communication skills for effectively conveying technical information, drafting detailed reports and proposals, and working seamlessly with drafting personnel and multidisciplinary teams;
  • Organized and Detail-Oriented: Proven ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently, maintain attention to detail, and oversee project timelines and budgets, ensuring successful project delivery; and
  • Experienced Relationship Builder: Strong capability to engage with clients, represent the company effectively, and contribute to business development efforts through proposal preparation and client interactions.

What Will Make you Stand Out:

  • A Master's or Ph.D. in Civil Engineering with a focus on bridge design, construction, or rehabilitation will set you apart as a candidate;
  • Familiarity with Atlantic Canadian and/or Ontario Provincial Standard Specifications;
  • Experience with various inspection methodologies, especially OSIM;
  • Knowledge of timber design and familiarity with US and/or European codes;
  • A passion for mentoring and developing junior engineers and technologists;
  • Advanced analytical and computer modeling skills (LUSAS Bridge preferred); and
  • Strong client relationship management skills.
