What does a junior risk compliance analyst do?

A Junior Risk Compliance Analyst assists organizations in identifying, assessing, and mitigating risks related to regulatory compliance and internal policies. They support the creation and implementation of risk management procedures, monitor and report on compliance with laws and regulations, and help perform audits to ensure proper controls are in place. This entry-level role often involves collecting and analyzing data, preparing compliance documentation, and communicating findings to senior staff. By helping to ensure the organization meets legal and ethical standards, Junior Risk Compliance Analysts play a crucial role in reducing potential financial and reputational risks.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a junior risk compliance analyst?

To thrive as a Junior Risk Compliance Analyst, you need a solid understanding of regulatory compliance, risk assessment, and data analysis, usually supported by a degree in finance, business, or a related field. Familiarity with compliance management software, risk assessment tools, and knowledge of frameworks like SOX or ISO 27001 are commonly required. Strong attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication skills help you excel in this role. These capabilities are crucial for accurately identifying risks, ensuring regulatory adherence, and supporting the organization’s overall risk management strategy.

What are some common challenges faced by a junior risk compliance analyst in their first year?

Junior Risk Compliance Analysts often encounter challenges such as navigating complex regulatory requirements and quickly learning company-specific compliance policies. Balancing multiple tasks—like monitoring transactions, preparing reports, and assisting with audits—can be demanding, especially when adapting to new compliance software or procedures. Collaborating with other departments, such as legal and operations, also requires honing communication skills and understanding how compliance supports broader business objectives. Supportive teams and ongoing training typically help new analysts overcome these hurdles.

Job description

Risk & Compliance Analyst 100% ONSITE

AFF Compliance is seeking a highly motivated Risk & Compliance Analyst to support and enhance our compliance program in alignment with AFF's risk appetite and regulatory obligations. This role plays a critical part in ensuring adherence to applicable laws and regulations, providing risk-based guidance to business partners, and helping strengthen AFF's overall control environment.

The ideal candidate is a proactive problem solver who can work independently while collaborating effectively across functions. This position will partner closely with teams across Legal, Operations, Business Risk, and senior leadership to identify emerging risks, drive process improvements, and contribute to the continued evolution of the compliance program. The role reports directly to the Regulatory Compliance Lead.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support and execute Second Line of Defense (SLOD) oversight activities, including Compliance Management System (CMS) administration, issue management, complaint management, regulatory change management, and third-party/vendor risk oversight.
  • Conduct compliance testing, monitoring activities, and risk assessments to evaluate adherence to applicable laws, regulations, and internal policies.
  • Identify, investigate, and document compliance concerns, partnering with stakeholders to perform root cause analysis and implement sustainable corrective actions.
  • Assist with regulatory inquiries, examinations, and audits by preparing documentation, conducting independent compliance reviews, and coordinating responses and deliverables.
  • Collaborate with business partners to strengthen policies, procedures, and controls while ensuring alignment with regulatory requirements and evolving business risks.
  • Analyze regulatory developments and emerging risks, providing recommendations to enhance compliance processes and controls.
  • Promote a culture of compliance, accountability, transparency, and proactive risk management throughout the organization.
  • Support ongoing compliance program initiatives and contribute to continuous process improvement efforts.

What We're Looking For

  • Working knowledge of compliance, regulatory, legal, and operational risks, with an understanding of Second Line of Defense frameworks and practices.
  • Experience conducting compliance testing, monitoring, risk assessments, or related assurance activities with a strong focus on quality and attention to detail.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with the ability to assess risk, identify issues, and develop practical solutions.
  • Ability to effectively challenge assumptions and influence outcomes through collaborative and constructive communication.
  • Demonstrated ownership, initiative, and a proactive approach to identifying and mitigating risk.
  • Growth mindset with a strong interest in developing a long-term career within Risk & Compliance.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, Risk Management, Legal Studies, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience in consumer regulatory compliance, risk management, internal audit, or a related discipline.
  • Experience supporting Second Line of Defense functions, including compliance testing, issue management, complaint management, regulatory change management, or regulatory oversight activities.
  • Familiarity with applicable federal and state consumer protection laws and regulations.
  • Strong investigative, analytical, and problem-solving capabilities, including the ability to identify root causes and recommend effective remediation strategies.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
