What does a junior product developer do?

A Junior Product Developer assists in the creation and improvement of new products, often working under the supervision of senior developers or product managers. Their responsibilities typically include researching market trends, helping design prototypes, coordinating with suppliers or manufacturers, and supporting testing and quality assurance. They play a key role in turning concepts into tangible products by handling tasks across various stages of the development process. This entry-level position is ideal for those looking to gain experience in product design, development, and project management.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a junior product developer?

A Junior Product Developer typically needs a background in product design, basic project management, and knowledge of market research, often supported by a relevant degree in engineering, design, or business. Job Description

Boyd Thermal by Eaton is currently seeking a Junior Product Manager for our Billerica, MA facility. We are seeking a process-minded Associate / Junior Product Manager with an engineering background to join our Thermal Management team. In this role, you will start with a focus on our liquid cooling portfolio, specifically Coolant Distribution Units (CDUs) and complementary cooling systems and components powering high-density data center and AI/HPC deployments.

You will serve as the process engine for the product lifecycle, bringing structure, standard product management tools, and stage-gate process discipline from initial product concept through design, launch, and end-of-life.

You will work directly alongside senior product leadership with decades of deep domain, customer, and market expertise. Your role will be to supplement this institutional knowledge with formal product management frameworks, stage-gate rigor, clear documentation, and cross-functional tracking across Engineering, Marketing, Sales, Operations, and Quality.

Key Responsibilities

1. Stage-Gate Process & NPI Execution

  • Drive New Product Introduction (NPI): Facilitate phase-gate governance across cross-functional teams, managing gate reviews, action items, and readiness checklists to ensure smooth transitions from concept to commercial launch.

  • Requirements & Portfolio Artifacts: Assist in drafting and maintain Market Requirements Documents (MRDs), Product Requirements Documents (PRDs), product roadmaps, and business cases for new standard products and customized or configured products.

  • PM Toolset Standardization: Utilize and champion standard product management tools, project management tools, PLM software, workflow management tools, and financial models.

2. Cross-Functional Integration (Engineering, Marketing, & Sales)

  • Marketing Alignment: Partner closely with Corporate and Product Marketing teams to guide product positioning, define key value propositions, support launch campaigns, refine web/collateral content, and analyze market/competitor dynamics.

  • Engineering Collaboration: Act as liaison with thermal, mechanical, and electrical design engineering teams to translate customer/market requirements into technical scope.

  • Commercial & Sales Enablement: Collaborate with Sales and Application Engineering to create technical selection guides, datasheets, pricing tools, and customer-facing application notes.

3. Market & Business Analysis

  • Portfolio Tracking: Work with finance and operations to track cost models, product margin targets, and pricing structures across CDU configurations.

  • Voice of Customer (VoC) Integration: Gather feedback from field engineers, sales teams, commissioning agents, and marketing intelligence to continuously feed revision requirements back into the product backlog.

Basic Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or related field required (Mechanical, Thermal, Mechatronics, Industrial, or Electrical Engineering).

  • A minimum of one (1) year of experience in multi-piece mechanical manufacturing.

  • A minimum of one (1) year of experience as an Associate PM, Junior PM, or Product Specialist in a technical hardware manufacturing company. Experience in technical program management may also be considered.

  • Experience with Stage-Gate Discipline: Practical experience with Stage-Gate / Phase-Gate NPI methodologies used to bring physical hardware products from concept to full production.

  • Experience with PM/TPM Toolsets: Hands-on familiarity with PLM systems, project tracking software (Jira, Asana, MS Project), and financial modeling in Excel.

  • Eaton will not consider applicants for employment immigration sponsorship or support for this position. This means that Eaton will not support any CPT, OPT, or STEM OPT plans, F-1 to H-1B, H-1B cap registration, O-1, E-3, TN status, I-485 job portability, etc.

  • No relocation benefit is offered for this position. Only candidates residing within the immediate area of Billerica, MA (50 miles) will be considered for this position.

Required Knowledge & Skills:

  • Cross-Functional Communication: Proven ability to build consensus and coordinate deliverables between technical engineering teams, creative marketing groups, and quota-carrying sales representatives.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Technical exposure to data center infrastructure, industrial HVAC equipment, liquid cooling systems, fluid handling/pumps, heat exchangers, or power electronics.

Location & Work Environment

  • Location: Open to hybrid arrangements from several of our Northeastern US facilities (EST preferred). No relocation assistance is available for this position.
