They typically perform duties such as patrolling neighborhoods, responding to emergency calls, conducting traffic stops, and assisting senior officers with investigations. Junior Patrol Officers also engage with the community to build trust and provide support where needed. This role serves as a foundation for gaining experience before advancing to more specialized positions within the police force.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a junior patrol officer?

To thrive as a Junior Patrol Officer, you need a solid understanding of law enforcement principles, physical fitness, and completion of police academy training or relevant certification. Familiarity with radio communication systems, body-worn cameras, and incident reporting software is typically required. Strong observational skills, sound judgment, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for this role. These abilities are essential for ensuring public safety, responding appropriately to incidents, and building trust within the community.

What are some typical challenges faced by junior patrol officers during their first year on the job?

Junior Patrol Officers often encounter challenges such as adapting to shift work, quickly assessing situations under pressure, and building effective communication skills with both the public and experienced colleagues. Job description

Advanced Security Officer — Signal Security of Hawaii | Kahului, Maui
$23/hour | Full-Time | Commercial Site
Lead from the front. Raise the standard. Represent Signal.
Signal Security of Hawaii is hiring an Advanced Security Officer for a commercial site in Kahului. This is a step above standard patrol — you'll oversee site operations, support your team, and be the person everyone on post looks to when it matters. We're looking for an experienced professional who holds themselves and others to a high standard and leads by example every single shift.
If you have at least two years in security and you're ready to take on more responsibility, we want to talk.
What the job looks like day to day:
- Overseeing all security operations at an assigned commercial site
- Leading and supporting a team of officers throughout the shift
- Assisting with the training and onboarding of new and junior officers
- Holding yourself and your team accountable to post orders, procedures, and conduct standards
- Conducting vehicle and foot patrols of the property and monitoring all access points
- Writing and reviewing accurate, detailed incident reports
- Serving as the primary point of contact for clients, property management, and supervisors
- De-escalating situations with confidence and professionalism
- Maintaining and overseeing the care of company equipment on site
What Signal brings to the table:
- $23/hour starting pay with room to grow
- Full benefits package after 90 days — health insurance and additional benefit options
- Paid training and professional development
- Holiday pay for some state and federal holidays
- Referral bonuses and employee recognition programs
- Long-term loyalty benefits for officers who grow with us
Signal promotes from within. Advanced Officers who perform are the first considered when supervisory and management positions open up.
What we require:
- 21 years or older
- Minimum 2 years of experience in security
- Active Hawaii State Guard Card (non-negotiable)
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record (non-negotiable)
- Ability to pass a background check and drug screening (non-negotiable)
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Proven ability to lead, motivate, and hold a team accountable
- High level of professionalism in appearance, conduct, and communication
- Reliable transportation and a device for communication
- Physically able to lift up to 20 lbs
Bonus points for:
- Prior experience in a lead, senior, or supervisory security role
- Familiarity with commercial site security operations
- Experience training or mentoring junior officers
- Strong situational awareness and sound judgment under pressure
