What is a junior LLM researcher?

Junior LLM Researchers are early-career professionals who assist in the development, evaluation, and improvement of large language models (LLMs) like GPT or BERT. Their responsibilities often include data collection, model fine-tuning, conducting experiments, and analyzing results under the guidance of senior researchers. They typically have a background in computer science, machine learning, or related fields and work as part of research teams in academia or industry. This role helps them gain hands-on experience and deepen their understanding of natural language processing and AI research.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a junior LLM researcher, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Junior LLM Researcher, a solid foundation in machine learning, natural language processing, and programming (typically Python) is essential, often backed by a relevant degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow and experience with large language model libraries like Hugging Face Transformers are commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help researchers collaborate and convey complex ideas. These competencies are crucial for advancing research, developing innovative models, and contributing to the progress of AI technologies.

What are some typical challenges faced by junior LLM researchers when collaborating with senior team members?

Junior LLM Researchers often encounter challenges such as bridging the knowledge gap with more experienced colleagues and adapting to established research methodologies. Navigating complex discussions about model architectures or experimental design can be daunting, but these interactions offer valuable learning opportunities. Proactive communication and openness to feedback are essential, as is seeking clarification when needed. Most teams encourage knowledge sharing, so junior researchers are supported in their growth while contributing fresh perspectives to group projects.

Job description

About Junior
We're building cutting-edge LLM-powered tools that supercharge investment research for the world's most demanding deal teams. Our clients include several of the top 10 global private equity firms, Big 4 professional services firms, and leading consulting practices: organisations responsible for deploying billions of dollars annually.
We're a profitable, bootstrapped company with a growing team of ~28 people based in London and New York. We 10x'd our revenue in 2025 and are on track to grow 2-3x again this year. Junior saves clients an average of 10 hours per week, and we're expanding fast into new verticals including investment banking, hedge funds, and research firms.
Role Description
As a Fall Engineering Intern, you'll be embedded directly in our engineering team and own a meaningful project end-to-end. You'll ship real code, collaborate with full-time engineers, and present your work to the team at the end of the summer. This is not a passive learning experience - we expect you to contribute from day one.
What You'll Work On
  • Building AI-powered features using LLMs to process and structure unstructured research data
  • Contributing to our Next.js / TypeScript frontend for client-facing products
  • Working on data pipelines that turn raw investment research into structured knowledge

What We're Looking For
  • Currently pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field
  • Comfortable working in TypeScript / JavaScript - Next.js experience is a plus
  • Curious about AI and LLM-powered products
  • Strong communicator who can work closely with a small, fast-moving team
  • Previous internship or co-op experience is a bonus, not a requirement

What You'll Get
  • $40/hr compensation
  • Free daily breakfast/lunch - we have an in-office cook
  • MacBook for the duration of the internship
  • Dedicated engineering mentor
  • Real ownership - your code ships to production
  • Final project presentation to the full team
  • Consideration for a return offer based on performance

Visa & Work Authorization
We welcome applicants who are authorized to work in the US, including:
  • US citizens and permanent residents
  • F-1 students on CPT or OPT
  • Canadian citizens (TN visa)
  • Irish citizens (J-1 intern visa)

If you're excited about the opportunity to drive innovation at Junior, we'd love to hear from you! We can't wait to meet you!
