Job description

POSITION PURPOSE

A shop hourly position with the primary responsibilities of planning, organizing, and directing work activities for a small team of Assembly, Tri-Armor, and Welding personnel in the Pan Factory. As a senior mechanic, The Pan Assembler I is an influencer, who leads junior mechanics or teams as assigned and demonstrates BAC’s values of Earning Trust, Embracing Responsibility, Showing Courage, and Driving Innovation. The Mechanic I will also be required to train and mentor junior mechanics and assist the department leadership team with daily assignments as directed. The purpose for every position at BAC regardless of department or level can be summed up as doing the right thing in the right way.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

• Owns personal and team safety. Observes all safety rules and uses the proper safety equipment at all times.
• Plan, organize, and direct activities in the Pan and Tri-Armor Departments; Responsible for coordinating the on-time delivery of Pan’s to all assembly lines in partnership with the day time Station Leader.
• Responsible for the daily, weekly, and monthly sign-off of the TriArmor work procedure checklist.
• Provide oversight and guidance for the welding passivation process in the Pan Department; Maintain proper inventory of consumables in partnership with the Station Leader.
• Ensure all Pans are tested in line with BAC’s quality requirements.
• Utilize standard work to assemble mechanical support assemblies to specification.
• Operate equipment in a manner that maximizes productivity and quality to meet or exceed production goals for the shift.
• Safely operate jib cranes and/or overhead cranes to lift, move, and position components.
• Train junior mechanics of the team to achieve technical and professional expertise.
• Provide leadership to the team in the absence of the Shift Lead and or Team Leader.
• Able to participate in regional projects if needed.
• Operate as an influencer and subject matter expert
• Understand departmental metrics and communicate / interpret for junior mechanics.
• Update and post metrics as assigned.
• Accurately complete paperwork or online data entry required by department.
• Document processes for knowledge capture and the training of junior mechanics.
• Maintains and sustain 5S standards in the department.
• Participate in continuous improvement activities and projects.
• Contribute to departmental safety improvements and initiatives.
• Aggressively uphold and support quality and process standards
• Mentors and drives LEAN principles in the area.
• Ensure individual activities embrace sustainability, reduce the impact on the environment, minimize waste, maximize recycling, minimize energy and water usage.
• Support a culture of innovation through original thinking to improve processes, methods, systems or services; translates new ideas into business opportunities
• Perform other duties as assigned by plant leadership.


NATURE & SCOPE

Reports to the Team Leader, Station Leader or other supervisor as assigned. Provides hands on leadership and mentoring to junior mechanics and fills department leadership roles as needed. As a senior mechanic, expertise may be requested to participate on regional project teams. Expectation is to operate as an influencer and subject matter expert.

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS

• Basic understanding of the Pan Welding Process, welding passivation process and any related EPA regulations.
• Knowledge of the TriArmor spray booth operation, including but not limited to, EPA regulations, safety hazards, and operation of equipment.
• Demonstrated ability to lead small groups.
• Ability to read and interpret all types of BAC shop documents – Submittals, Fabrication Sheets, Assembly Lists (BoM’s), and Work Orders.
• Ability to understand and react to job schedules.
• Demonstrated ability to read and interpret drawings, blueprints and welding symbols.
• Demonstrated ability to operate overhead and JIB cranes; achieved through required certification.
• Ability to read measuring devices: weld gage, inclinometer & tape measure.
• Competent in math including: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractional computations, and fraction to decimal conversions
• High level of product knowledge of BAC’s numerous models and parts
• Effective written communication including documentation of processes, and the communication of those processes with fellow mechanics. Ability to communicate to supervisors and co-workers with written memos or emails that are professional, concise and clearly understood.
• Demonstrated oral communication skills including the ability to communicate professionally with BAC customer and co-workers. The ability to share information verbally that is clearly understood and technically accurate
• Demonstrate strong skills in initiative, problem solving, and working in a “team” environment.
• Demonstrated ability to lead small groups
• A minimum of one year experience in the department is preferred
• Knowledge of continuous improvement tools and ability to support root cause analysis for identified quality issues.
• Understands and adheres to LEAN principles in the area.
• Computer competency with MS Excel including updating data and generating metrics in pre-formatted spreadsheets.
• Demonstrated flexibility to work at multiple department work stations and adapt to change.
• Ability to work on cross functional teams in support of plant objectives.

WORKING CONDITIONS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. The working environment includes lifting up to 50lbs. Occasional work at heights of up to 20 feet. Standing is to be expected up to 80% of the time. Additional activities include: walking, reaching, bending, stooping, and sitting. Fine hand manipulation of controls is needed as well as hand eye coordination to perform changes. Working hours can include any of three shifts and generally are scheduled for forty hours a week. Some weekend overtime is to be expected. Working temperatures include both wide fluctuations within the plant as well as ambient outside temperatures.
