Junior Java Programmers are entry-level software developers who specialize in writing, testing, and maintaining code using the Java programming language. They typically work under the supervision of more experienced developers and assist in developing applications, debugging issues, and learning best practices in software development. Their responsibilities often include understanding project requirements, writing clean code, and collaborating with team members to deliver high-quality software solutions. This role is ideal for individuals who have foundational knowledge of Java and are looking to gain professional experience in the field.

What types of projects or tasks can a junior Java programmer expect to work on in their first year?

As a Junior Java Programmer, you can expect to work on a variety of tasks such as debugging existing code, writing unit tests, developing small features, and assisting with backend development on larger projects. You'll often collaborate closely with senior developers and participate in code reviews to learn best practices. Many organizations assign juniors to maintenance tasks or simpler modules at first, gradually increasing responsibility as you build confidence and technical skills. This hands-on experience is invaluable for understanding software development workflows and improving your coding abilities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a junior Java programmer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Junior Java Programmer, you need a solid understanding of Java programming, object-oriented concepts, and a relevant degree or coursework in computer science. Job description

Citi is looking for a Senior Java Developer to design, build, and deliver complex software applications within a high-performing Technology team that directly supports business-critical systems across the firm. In this role, you will operate as a subject matter expert, shaping end-to-end application development from system architecture through to deployment and ongoing support. You will influence technical standards, mentor peers, and collaborate across technology and business teams to deliver solutions that are secure, scalable, and aligned to real business outcomes.

Responsibilities
  • Design and develop scalable software applications using Java 17+, Spring Boot Microservices, and Hibernate, ensuring solutions are robust, maintainable, and aligned to business requirements.
  • Build and maintain full-stack solutions by developing frontend interfaces with JavaScript, HTML5, and CSS3, and integrating backend services to deliver seamless user experiences.
  • Lead system analysis and architecture activities, producing design artefacts including architecture diagrams, flowcharts, activity diagrams, and sequence diagrams to guide development decisions.
  • Manage all phases of the software development lifecycle, from feasibility assessment and technical planning through to construction, testing, implementation, and post-go-live support.
  • Embed security best practices into application design and conduct post-implementation analysis to validate system functionality and identify areas for improvement.
  • Drive quality across the codebase by implementing and maintaining automated test coverage using frameworks such as JUnit, Cucumber, and Playwright.
  • Act as a technical authority for senior stakeholders and cross-functional teams, providing guidance on advanced engineering solutions and helping to define development standards and processes.
  • Mentor and coach junior and mid-level engineers, sharing technical knowledge and supporting their development within the team.
Required qualifications & skills
  • 5 or more years of hands-on experience in software application development or systems design, with a clear track record of delivering complex technical solutions end to end.
  • Deep expertise in backend development using Java 17+, Spring, Spring Boot Microservices, and Hibernate, with strong command of Oracle PL/SQL for database development.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce software design artefacts including architecture documentation, flowcharts, and UML-style activity and sequence diagrams.
  • Practical experience managing projects using Agile methodologies and JIRA, with the ability to plan, prioritize, and deliver under shifting timelines and requirements.
  • Subject matter expertise in at least one area of software application development, with the ability to advise senior stakeholders and guide technical decision-making independently.
  • Strong proficiency in source control practices using Git, with experience working across collaborative, multi-team development environments.
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field or equivalent professional experience.
Beneficial skills & qualifications
  • Working knowledge of Angular 16+ for building dynamic, component-based frontend applications.
  • Practical experience using AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot, Claude, or Devin to accelerate design and coding workflows.
  • Familiarity with MongoDB or other NoSQL database technologies as a complement to relational database experience.
What we offer
