Job description

Support Engineer
Are you a highly skilled IT professional who enjoys solving complex technical problems, taking ownership of challenging issues, and improving the technology environment around you? Exigent Mechanical Services is looking for a Support Engineer to serve as a senior technical resource supporting our growing organization and seven operating companies.
This is more than a traditional help desk role. As a Support Engineer, you will serve as a senior escalation point for complex IT issues, working across Microsoft 365, Entra ID, Intune, Windows endpoints, networking, cloud platforms, security, and other enterprise technologies. You will troubleshoot issues that require deeper technical expertise, identify root causes, partner with our managed service provider when appropriate, and help develop scalable solutions that improve the IT experience across the organization.
The ideal candidate is technically strong, highly dependable, comfortable working independently, and able to communicate complex technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical employees.
This is a hybrid position. The Support Engineer will primarily work remotely but will be required to report onsite at Exigent or operating company locations as needed based on business and IT support requirements.
About the Role
As a Support Engineer, you will provide advanced technical support across Exigent Mechanical Services and its seven operating companies. You will work closely with employees, leadership, the IT team, and our managed service provider to resolve complex technical issues and ensure our systems, users, devices, and infrastructure remain secure, reliable, and operational.
You will have the opportunity to:
  • Serve as a senior technical resource and escalation point for complex IT issues
  • Troubleshoot advanced problems across endpoints, identity, Microsoft 365, networking, applications, and cloud platforms
  • Take ownership of technical issues from initial investigation through resolution
  • Identify root causes rather than simply addressing symptoms
  • Improve IT processes, standards, documentation, and support procedures
  • Support infrastructure upgrades, system implementations, and technology initiatives
  • Partner with the MSP to resolve issues requiring additional expertise or vendor support
  • Identify opportunities to automate repetitive tasks and improve operational efficiency
  • Help create a more consistent and scalable IT environment across multiple operating companies
  • Collaborate with leadership and internal stakeholders to understand business needs and translate them into practical technology solutions

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced IT professional who wants to move beyond day-to-day support and play a meaningful role in solving complex problems, improving systems, and helping shape the organization's IT environment.
Key Responsibilities
Advanced IT Support & Troubleshooting
  • Provide advanced Tier 2 and Tier 3 technical support for hardware, software, networking, cloud, identity, and application issues
  • Take ownership of complex technical problems and drive issues through resolution
  • Troubleshoot issues independently using structured diagnostic and root-cause analysis techniques
  • Investigate recurring or difficult-to-resolve problems and develop long-term solutions
  • Serve as an escalation point for issues that cannot be resolved through standard support procedures
  • Determine when issues should be escalated to the managed service provider, software vendors, or other technical resources
  • Collaborate with the MSP to troubleshoot complex infrastructure and application issues
  • Clearly communicate technical findings, recommended solutions, and status updates to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Maintain a strong service-oriented approach while balancing urgency, business impact, and technical requirements

Microsoft 365, Identity & Access Management
  • Administer and troubleshoot Microsoft 365 environments
  • Manage and troubleshoot user accounts, permissions, licenses, groups, and access
  • Administer and troubleshoot Active Directory and Microsoft Entra ID
  • Investigate authentication, access, synchronization, and identity-related issues
  • Support Microsoft 365 applications and services, including email and collaboration tools
  • Support onboarding, transfers, and offboarding from a technical access perspective
  • Troubleshoot permissions and access issues across applications and systems
  • Help maintain appropriate security and access controls

Endpoint Management & Windows Administration
  • Administer and troubleshoot Windows-based endpoints
  • Support endpoint provisioning, configuration, deployment, replacement, and lifecycle management
  • Manage and troubleshoot devices through Microsoft Intune and/or Endpoint Manager
  • Support Microsoft Autopilot and automated device provisioning
  • Investigate device compliance, configuration, policy, and deployment issues
  • Troubleshoot hardware, operating system, application, driver, and peripheral issues
  • Test and validate new hardware, software, applications, and endpoint configurations
  • Help establish and maintain endpoint standards and configuration best practices

Network & Infrastructure Support
  • Troubleshoot advanced network connectivity and performance issues
  • Diagnose issues involving LAN/WAN connectivity, TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VPN, and related network services
  • Troubleshoot network hardware and connectivity issues involving switches, firewalls, wireless infrastructure, and other network equipment
  • Partner with the MSP or network vendors on complex network issues
  • Analyze network-related problems to identify root causes and recurring issues
  • Support network and infrastructure changes associated with new locations, office moves, equipment upgrades, and technology projects
  • Help document network configurations, standards, and troubleshooting procedures

Cloud & Systems Administration
  • Support administration and troubleshooting of Microsoft Azure and other cloud-based services
  • Troubleshoot cloud connectivity, authentication, configuration, and access issues
  • Support integrations between cloud services, endpoints, identity platforms, and business applications
  • Assist with maintaining secure and reliable cloud configurations
  • Monitor and investigate system issues that impact business operations
  • Work with internal stakeholders and external providers to resolve cloud and infrastructure issues

Security & Endpoint Configuration

IT Projects & Implementations
  • Support and contribute to infrastructure upgrades and technology implementations
  • Take ownership of technical workstreams or assigned components of larger IT projects
  • Assist with evaluating, testing, and implementing new hardware, software, systems, and services
  • Coordinate technical activities with internal stakeholders, vendors, and the MSP
  • Test and validate solutions prior to broader deployment
  • Identify potential issues and recommend improvements before implementation
  • Assist with technology rollouts across multiple operating companies
  • Document project changes, configurations, procedures, and lessons learned

Documentation, Standards & Process Improvement
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation, procedures, standards, and troubleshooting guides
  • Document recurring issues and known solutions to improve future support efficiency

  • Recommend improvements to existing IT workflows and procedures
  • Identify repetitive manual processes that could be automated
  • Use PowerShell or other scripting tools to improve efficiency where appropriate
  • Help build a knowledge base that enables the IT team to resolve issues more consistently
