What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Junior Interaction Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Junior Interaction Designer, you need a solid understanding of user experience (UX) principles, wireframing, prototyping, and a foundation in design tools, often supported by a relevant degree or coursework. Familiarity with tools like Figma, Sketch, Adobe XD, and usability testing platforms is typically expected. Creativity, attention to detail, and strong collaboration and communication skills help you stand out in this role. These skills ensure that digital products are intuitive, user-friendly, and effectively meet both user needs and business goals.

What does a Junior Interaction Designer do?

A Junior Interaction Designer helps create and improve the user experience of digital products by designing how users interact with interfaces such as websites, apps, or software. They work closely with senior designers and developers to create wireframes, prototypes, and user flows based on user needs and feedback. Their responsibilities often include conducting user research, testing interfaces, and making design recommendations to ensure products are intuitive and easy to use. This role is typically entry-level and provides opportunities to learn and grow within the field of user experience (UX) and interaction design.

What are some common challenges a Junior Interaction Designer faces when working on cross-functional teams?

As a Junior Interaction Designer, one common challenge is effectively communicating design concepts to team members from different disciplines, such as developers and product managers. Balancing user needs with technical constraints and business objectives can also be complex, especially when priorities compete. Developing strong collaboration and feedback skills is key, as you'll frequently iterate on designs based on input from various stakeholders. Over time, gaining confidence in presenting your ideas and adapting to feedback will help you grow in this collaborative environment.

Job description

SPREAD ENTHUSIASM. SHAPE THE FUTURE.

SHARE YOUR PASSION.

Knowing the destination isn't enough: you need to know how to get there. Build up your own networks, exploit new ideas, consistently take the initiative. Inspire other people with your enthusiasm. That's the only way to give ideas the power that allows them to become true innovations.

Designworks is the design innovation studio of BMW Group. For 25 years, we have been stimulating our parent company, as well as a select group of companies with ambitious visions for the future. We inspire and challenge the companies we work with to be at the forefront of their industries - in design, technology and innovation.  We are the architects of future - designing systems that impact and improve the world we live. If you share our vision and view yourself as an independent, creative thinker, we invite you to join our team in this exceptional role located in Santa Monica, CA.

WHAT AWAITS YOU.

  • Design interaction flows, UI components, and prototypes for digital products, with guidance and mentorship from senior designers as you build your craft.
  • Contribute to the full design process, from early concepts and wireframes through detailed UI, prototyping, and handoff on a range of projects from focused features to broader product experiences.
  • Help evaluate concepts against usability, accessibility, functionality, and client needs while folding research findings back into your design decisions.
  • Work within and contribute to design systems, ensuring consistency across components, patterns, and platforms.
  • Collaborate in cross-functional, agile teams using design thinking, and support senior staff in presenting work to internal stakeholders and clients.
  • Develop your skills in scoping and time estimation and design communication, taking on additional responsibilities as you grow.
  • Use AI tools thoughtfully in your design workflow and contribute to designing interfaces and interactions for AI-powered features.

WHAT YOU SHOULD BRING.

  • Bachelor's degree in Interaction Design, HCI, Graphic Design, or equivalent.
  • 0-2 years of prior work experience in Interaction/UI/UX Design or equivalent.
  • Familiarity with the end-to-end design process and curiosity about how research, production, and commercial context shape design decisions.
  • A solid grasp of core design principles: hierarchy, typography, layout, color, and an evolving sense of form.
  • Curiosity about AI and a working familiarity with current tools (e.g. ChatGPT, Claude, Figma AI, Midjourney, or similar) as part of your design and research process.
  • Strong computer and software skills in:
    • Adobe Creative Suite
    • Figma or other cloud collaboration and prototyping tools.
  • Preferences:
    • Exposure to 3D tools (Blender, Cinema 4D, Spline, etc.).
    • Knowledge of Motion Graphics Tools (After Effects, Rive, etc.).
    • Strong familiarity with Microsoft Office Tools.
    • Familiarity with interaction or creative coding languages (JavaScript, HTML/CSS, Processing, etc.).
    • Experience designing for AI-powered products, agentic interfaces, or LLM-based features.

WHAT YOU CAN LOOK FORWARD TO.

  • Medical, Dental, and Vision insurance
  • 401(k) with Company match and Retirement Income Account
  • Employee vehicle program
  • Bonus eligibility
  • Paid Parental Leave
  • Generous PTO and Company paid holidays
  • Voluntary Benefits to fit your needs
