Department Summary: MITRE is seeking a Senior UX/UI Engineer to support high-priority ODNI initiatives requiring front-end web application development. This role requires an active TS/SCI with a Full Scope Polygraph. In this role, you will collaborate with experienced engineers, designers, researchers, and stakeholders to help frame problems, understand mission needs, and translate user insights into intuitive and effective solutions. You will contribute to stakeholder engagement activities-such as discussions, feedback sessions, and iterative design reviews-to ensure solutions align with user and mission objectives. Roles & Responsibilities: The selected candidate will serve as a technical subject matter expert responsible for designing, documenting, developing, and refining interactive, visually engaging, and responsive front-end web applications and interaction designs within highly sensitive Intelligence Community environments. This position supports enterprise-level ODNI challenges related to technology modernization, data integration, analytic enablement, and secure collaboration. Responsibilities include: * Collaborate directly with ODNI sponsors and MITRE technical teams to translate complex mission workflows into clear, accessible, and mission-effective user interfaces that support analyst decision-making and reduce cognitive burden.
* Ability to work closely with human factors engineers, UX designers, researchers, project leaders, and sponsors to create software prototypes using current front-end technologies and best practices.
* Lead or support development of enterprise-grade application front ends for a variety of mission needs including data visualization, workflow automation, analytics and geospatial displays.
* Produce and maintain design-system components, interaction specifications, accessibility annotations, and developer-ready handoff documentation as necessary for sponsor engagement.
* Ensure performance, usability, and accessibility of application designs.
* Present designs and technical solutions clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
* Mentor junior developers/designers and contribute to department-wide technical standards. The primary responsibilities of this position must be carried out in person in McLean, Virginia or Bethesda, Maryland. The successful candidate will establish regular presence at MITRE and ODNI locations and may be required to travel within the National Capital Region. Basic Qualifications: * Typically requires a minimum of 5 years of related experience with a Bachelor's degree; or 3 years and a Master's degree; or a PhD with relevant experience who can immediately contribute.
* Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, HCI, UX Design, Human-Computer Interaction, or a related field.
* Active TS//SCI clearance with a Full Scope Polygraph (required at time of hire).
* Demonstrated experience as a Front-end web application developer with strong experience in UI/UX, interaction design, visual design, and usability.
* Proficiency in front-end technologies such as JavaScript, HTML, CSS, D3, JavaScript Frameworks such as Angular, Vue, React, and/or similar libraries
* Experience with UI-first rapid prototyping and development approaches.
* Experience with CSS frameworks such as Tailwind or Material Design-based libraries.
* Deep understanding of usability, accessibility, visual hierarchy, and user-centered design principles. Preferred Qualifications: * Experience with geospatial application design (ESRI, open-source geospatial libraries).
* Experience with modern JavaScript frameworks such as React, Vue, Angular and HTMx.
* Experience developing web applications with different architectures including server-side rendering (SSR), single page applications (SPAs), and hybrid applications (interactive islands pattern).
* Experience working within Linux-based environments, including command line and shell scripting.
* Experience using version control systems (Git) and managing code reviews and releases.
* Experience developing applications within Intelligence Community or ODNI environments.
* Experience with AWS-managed services and cloud-native architectures.
* Experience producing high-quality software documentation and design artifacts.
* Familiarity with alternative JavaScript runtimes such as Bun or Deno. This requisition requires the candidate to have a minimum of the following clearance(s):
