Job description

Job Title: Senior Infrastructure Engineer

Location: Boston, MA area (Hybrid - must be within driving range of our colocation facility)

Department: IT / Infrastructure

Reports to: Head of Technology

About the Role

We're a small, fast-growing healthcare data analytics company looking for a Senior Infrastructure Engineer to own and evolve our core infrastructure as we scale. You'll take primary responsibility for our virtualization, networking, and colocation environment, and drive the tooling and architecture decisions that let a lean IT/infrastructure function support a rapidly growing organization. This is a hands-on, high-ownership role - you'll be designing and building, not just maintaining, with real influence over our infrastructure roadmap and standards as we grow toward a larger footprint.

Key Responsibilities

  • Infrastructure Architecture & Ownership: Design, build, and maintain our on-prem virtualization environment (Proxmox), storage, and colocation infrastructure, with an eye toward scalability and resilience.
  • Networking: Own core network architecture and operations - firewalls, switching, VLANs, routing, and site connectivity - including hands-on colo work.
  • Strategic Tooling & Standards: Evaluate, select, and implement infrastructure tooling and standards (automation/config management, monitoring, backup/DR) to support a growing headcount and expanding compliance requirements.
  • Automation & Infrastructure-as-Code: Build and extend automation for provisioning and configuration management (e.g., Ansible), reducing manual work as the environment scales.
  • Security & Compliance Support: Partner with security and compliance stakeholders to ensure infrastructure meets audit and compliance requirements (e.g., SOC 2, HITRUST) as the org matures.
  • Mentorship & Cross-Team Collaboration: Act as the senior technical resource for infrastructure and networking questions, mentoring more junior support/infrastructure staff and partnering closely with engineering leadership on roadmap and capacity planning.

Qualifications

  • 7+ years of hands-on infrastructure/network/systems engineering experience (no helpdesk or desktop support experience required).
  • Deep, hands-on experience with virtualization platforms (Proxmox, VMware, Hyper-V, or similar) in a production environment.
  • Strong networking expertise: firewalls, VLANs, routing/switching, and troubleshooting at the packet level; experience owning network architecture, not just following one.
  • Track record of evaluating and selecting infrastructure tooling and standards for a scaling organization, not just operating what's already in place.
  • Experience with infrastructure-as-code / configuration management (Ansible or equivalent) at production scale.
  • Comfortable owning ambiguous, under-specified problems in a small-company environment and driving them to a solution independently.
  • Strong documentation and cross-functional communication skills - able to explain infrastructure tradeoffs to non-infrastructure stakeholders.
  • Willing to travel periodically to our colocation facility, including occasional off-hours work for planned maintenance windows.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with pfSense/OPNsense or other firewall platforms, including HA/failover configurations.
  • Experience supporting SOC 2, HITRUST, or similar compliance frameworks from an infrastructure perspective.
  • Certifications such as Cisco CCNA/CCNP, or relevant vendor certifications (VMware VCP, Proxmox, etc.).
  • Telephony/VoIP experience.
  • Scripting/coding ability beyond PowerShell (e.g., Python, Bash) for tooling and automation.
  • Experience standing up or scaling infrastructure for a company going through rapid headcount growth.
