What is a junior Go developer?

Junior Go Developers are entry-level software engineers who specialize in programming using the Go (Golang) language. They typically work under the supervision of more experienced developers to build, test, and maintain applications, focusing on tasks such as writing code, fixing bugs, and learning best practices. Their responsibilities may include collaborating with teams, contributing to code reviews, and gradually taking on more complex projects as they gain experience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a junior Go developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Junior Go Developer, you need a solid understanding of Go programming, basic software development principles, and familiarity with version control systems like Git, often supported by a relevant degree or coding bootcamp experience. Experience with Go-specific frameworks, RESTful APIs, and containerization tools such as Docker is typically expected. Strong problem-solving skills, eagerness to learn, and effective communication are vital soft skills for collaborating in development teams. These competencies enable efficient code delivery, adaptability to new technologies, and productive teamwork in a dynamic software environment.

What are some common challenges faced by junior Go developers during their first year on the job?

Junior Go Developers often encounter challenges such as understanding Go’s concurrency model, effectively using goroutines and channels, and adapting to Go’s strict typing and minimalistic standard library. Collaborating with more experienced team members and contributing to large, existing codebases can also be daunting at first. However, most teams support learning through code reviews, pair programming, and regular feedback, which helps new developers build confidence and deepen their understanding of Go’s best practices.

Depending on the selected candidate’s relevant experience, technical expertise, project scope, and leadership experience, the position may be filled as a BI Developer I, BI Developer II, Senior BI Developer, or Lead BI Developer.

In this role, you will partner with business and technical stakeholders to translate business needs into reliable dashboards, reports, data extracts, data integrations, governed datasets, and other BI solutions. You will also help ensure that solutions are accurate, supportable, secure, well documented, and aligned with development and data governance standards.

What You'll Do:

  • Design, develop, maintain, and support BI reports, dashboards, data extracts, datasets, and ETL/ELT processes.
  • Translate business requirements into technical specifications, solution designs, business rules, and supporting documentation.
  • Analyze and validate data to support requirements gathering, metric definition, data quality, reconciliation, and business acceptance.
  • Test solutions and validate outputs before implementation.
  • Troubleshoot reporting, data integration, scheduled-job, and production data issues.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation, including specifications, data mappings, lineage, procedures, and support documentation.
  • Support testing, change management, release planning, deployment readiness, and ongoing production support.
  • Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, automation, performance, reliability, and supportability.

  • Experience with, or exposure to, ETL/ELT and data integration tools or processes.
  • Ability to understand business requirements and translate them into technical solutions and documentation.
  • Experience analyzing, validating, and troubleshooting data.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with both technical and nontechnical audiences.
  • Strong problem-solving, critical-thinking, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple responsibilities and work within established deadlines.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Information Technology, Data Analytics, or a related field, or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Equivalent military experience may be considered.

Leveling Guidelines:

BI Developer I

Generally suited for candidates with foundational SQL, reporting, dashboard, or ETL knowledge and approximately one or more years of relevant IT experience. This level works from defined requirements, performs basic data analysis and testing, and develops technical skills with guidance.

BI Developer II

Generally suited for candidates with at least two years of related IT or BI experience who can independently develop reports and dashboards, translate more complex requirements, create ETL processes, and manage multiple assignments.

Senior BI Developer

Generally suited for candidates with at least five years of related BI, data engineering, data integration, reporting, or analytics delivery experience. Candidates at this level should be capable of developing and supporting enterprise data solutions, resolving complex production issues, leading significant technical work, and guiding junior team members.

Lead BI Developer

Generally suited for candidates with at least seven years of related experience who can provide technical direction, lead large-scale initiatives, influence solution design, establish or reinforce technical standards, and mentor other developers or analysts.

Preferred Qualifications:
