What does a junior embedded engineer do?

A Junior Embedded Engineer assists in designing, developing, and testing embedded systems, which are specialized computing systems that perform dedicated functions within larger devices. They typically work with microcontrollers, firmware, and hardware interfaces, often writing code in languages like C or C++. Junior engineers collaborate with senior engineers and cross-functional teams to troubleshoot issues, support product development, and improve system performance. Their role is crucial in industries like automotive, consumer electronics, and IoT, where embedded systems are widely used.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a junior embedded engineer?

To thrive as a Junior Embedded Engineer, you need a solid understanding of C/C++ programming, basic electronics, and embedded systems concepts, usually backed by a degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with microcontrollers, hardware debugging tools (like oscilloscopes and logic analyzers), and version control systems such as Git is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and effective communication help you adapt to project requirements and collaborate with cross-functional teams. These skills ensure you can develop reliable embedded solutions, troubleshoot issues efficiently, and contribute effectively to engineering projects.

What are common challenges a junior embedded engineer faces when transitioning from academic projects to real-world embedded systems development?

Junior Embedded Engineers often find that real-world projects involve working with complex hardware constraints, strict deadlines, and cross-functional teams. Unlike academic projects, embedded systems in industry must meet rigorous reliability, safety, and performance standards, often with limited documentation. Adapting to debugging hardware issues, integrating with legacy code, and collaborating closely with hardware engineers and senior developers can be challenging but also provides valuable learning opportunities. Embracing a proactive approach to problem-solving and seeking mentorship within the team can greatly ease this transition.

Virtual Construction - On - Site - BIM Coordinator & Engineer
Job Description:
Every day, our team members do amazing things in pursuit of our shared purpose to build trust with our clients, partners, subcontractors, and teammates. No matter your background, education, or career path, if you share our vision to create extraordinary experiences, you belong at HITT.
Shape the Future of How Buildings Get Built - From the Field
Positioned as a project-embedded Senior Associate on HITT's Virtual Construction team, this role is fully dedicated to a specific project and based on-site full time. You will work shoulder-to-shoulder with Superintendents, Project Engineers, Project Managers, and trade partners-using BIM and model-based workflows to directly support installation, sequencing, and real-time problem solving in the field.
Unlike traditional office-based VC roles, this position is intentionally field-forward. Your work will influence day-to-day construction decisions, support proactive issue resolution, and strengthen the connection between digital coordination and physical installation.
Position Overview
Serving as the project-embedded, on-site Virtual Construction lead, this role is fully integrated with field and site operations and dedicated to a single project. The Senior Associate enables construction execution through practical, constructible, and timely BIM coordination-bridging design intent, trade modeling, and field installation.
In this role, you will own the coordination process end-to-end, from model integration through clash resolution and installation support, while maintaining constant alignment with field leadership and trade partners.
Work Location: Full-time, on-site at an active HITT project Assignment Type: Dedicated to a single project for the duration of the assignment
Core Responsibilities
Field-Integrated BIM Coordination
  • Lead BIM coordination efforts directly from the jobsite, aligned with construction sequencing and installation priorities

  • Develop, manage, and maintain federated models integrating architectural, structural, MEP, and specialty contractor scopes

  • Run clash detection and issue resolution workflows with a focus on constructability and field execution

  • Partner closely with Superintendents and field engineers to align models with real-world constraints, means, and methods

  • Support look-ahead planning by identifying upcoming coordination risks before they impact the schedule

Construction & Trade Partner Collaboration
  • Act as the primary Virtual Construction point of contact for trade partners on site

  • Facilitate coordination meetings and working sessions that drive decisions-not just issue logs

  • Translate model information into actionable field deliverables (installation views, sequences, details, and layouts)

  • Support RFIs, field coordination questions, and design clarifications using model-based analysis

Reality Capture & Field Verification
  • Execute and manage reality capture workflows (terrestrial scanning, SLAM, photogrammetry as applicable)

  • Compare installed conditions against coordinated models to validate progress and detect deviations early

  • Integrate scan data into coordination and as-built documentation workflows

Installation & Schedule Support
  • Develop model-based installation studies and temporary works coordination

  • Support 4D sequencing and visualizations tied to site logistics and phasing

  • Assist field teams with model-driven planning for complex work areas and constrained conditions

Leadership and Mentorship (On Project)
  • Mentor junior team members assigned to the project on tools, processes, and professional growth

  • Contribute to internal VDC playbook development-expertise helps the whole team improve

  • Ensure deliverables meet HITT's rigorous quality standards every time

  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives including weekly knowledge-sharing sessions

Required Qualifications
  • 3-6 years of experience in commercial construction with 2+ years dedicated BIM/VDC experience

  • Strong proficiency in Revit and Navisworks for coordination and clash detection

  • Solid understanding of construction means and methods, sequencing, and field operations

  • Experience working directly with superintendents and trade partners

  • Comfort operating in an active jobsite environment

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with demonstrated ability to translate digital information into field-ready solutions

Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior experience in a field-embedded or project-dedicated VC role

  • Experience with reality capture and scan-to-model workflows

  • 4D scheduling experience (Synchro Pro, CM Builder, or similar)

  • Experience supporting large-scale or technically complex projects (data centers, healthcare, aviation, advanced manufacturing)

  • Ability to mentor junior team members assigned to the project

  • Experience with NVIDIA Omniverse or similar real-time 3D collaboration platforms
