What does a Junior Embedded Engineer do?

A Junior Embedded Engineer assists in designing, developing, and testing embedded systems, which are specialized computing systems that perform dedicated functions within larger devices. They typically work with microcontrollers, firmware, and hardware interfaces, often writing code in languages like C or C++. Junior engineers collaborate with senior engineers and cross-functional teams to troubleshoot issues, support product development, and improve system performance. Their role is crucial in industries like automotive, consumer electronics, and IoT, where embedded systems are widely used.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Junior Embedded Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Junior Embedded Engineer, you need a solid understanding of C/C++ programming, basic electronics, and embedded systems concepts, usually backed by a degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with microcontrollers, hardware debugging tools (like oscilloscopes and logic analyzers), and version control systems such as Git is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and effective communication help you adapt to project requirements and collaborate with cross-functional teams. These skills ensure you can develop reliable embedded solutions, troubleshoot issues efficiently, and contribute effectively to engineering projects.

What are common challenges a Junior Embedded Engineer faces when transitioning from academic projects to real-world embedded systems development?

Junior Embedded Engineers often find that real-world projects involve working with complex hardware constraints, strict deadlines, and cross-functional teams. Unlike academic projects, embedded systems in industry must meet rigorous reliability, safety, and performance standards, often with limited documentation. Adapting to debugging hardware issues, integrating with legacy code, and collaborating closely with hardware engineers and senior developers can be challenging but also provides valuable learning opportunities. Embracing a proactive approach to problem-solving and seeking mentorship within the team can greatly ease this transition.

Job description

Overview
Working across the globe, V2X builds smart solutions designed to integrate physical and digital infrastructure from base to battlefield. We bring 120 years of successful mission support to improve security, streamline logistics, and enhance readiness. Aligned around a shared purpose, our $3.9B company and 16,000 people work alongside our clients, here and abroad, to tackle their most complex challenges with integrity, respect, responsibility, and professionalism.
V2X is growing! We are seeking a highly accomplished Senior Systems Security Engineer with a BS or higher in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or closely related discipline. This individual will serve as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in system security engineering, real time embedded operating systems and processors, embedded system testing, secure processing, high performance computing (HPC), Cross Domain Solutions (CDS), High Assurance Secure Computing (HASC), Anti Tamper (AT) technologies for DoD weapons systems. The role involves designing, securing, testing, and advancing mission critical defense technologies to ensure resilience, compliance, and operational superiority.
Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities
  • System security engineering: Architect and implement secure system designs across real-time embedded platforms and weapons systems, applying advanced principles of hardware/software security.
  • Real-time embedded systems expertise: Develop, optimize, and secure real-time embedded operating systems (RTOS, Linux variants) and processor-level solutions (ARM, PowerPC, x86).
  • Embedded system testing: Design and execute rigorous test plans for real-time embedded platforms, including functional, performance, and security validation of processors and operating systems.
  • Secure processing & HPC: Lead initiatives in secure processor design, trusted execution environments, and high-performance computing architectures for defense applications.
  • Cross Domain Solutions (CDS): Apply deep knowledge of CDS technologies to enable secure information sharing across classified and unclassified domains, ensuring compliance with DoD and intelligence community standards.
  • High Assurance Secure Computing (HASC): Engineer systems with provable security properties, leveraging formal methods, trusted hardware, and high-assurance architectures to meet the most stringent DoD and intelligence community requirements.
  • Anti-Tamper (AT) technologies: Implement and evaluate AT techniques to protect critical defense systems against reverse engineering, exploitation, and unauthorized access.
  • Weapons systems integration: Provide technical leadership in the secure design, testing, and sustainment of DoD weapons systems, ensuring compliance with MIL-STD specifications.
  • Security compliance: Ensure adherence to DoD Risk Management Framework (RMF), NIST standards, and system security certification requirements.
  • Threat analysis: Conduct vulnerability assessments, penetration testing, and risk modeling for real-time embedded and defense systems.
  • Research and innovation: Drive R&D in emerging processor technologies, secure boot processes, trusted computing, CDS, HASC, AT, and HPC applications in defense.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with program managers, hardware/software engineers, and military stakeholders to deliver secure, mission-ready solutions.
  • Mentorship: Guide junior engineers and contribute to knowledge transfer within the organization.

This engineer will directly contribute to the security, reliability, and effectiveness of U.S. defense systems, ensuring that real-time embedded technologies are engineered, tested, and validated with resilience, integrity, and mission assurance at their core. They will be viewed as an expert in secure processing, high-performance computing, Cross Domain Solutions, High Assurance Secure Computing, Anti-Tamper technologies, and classified encryption standards, shaping the future of defense technology.
