Job description

The Engineering Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is seeking an Associate Electrical Engineer or Electrical Engineer to join our team. This multi-level position will support or lead electrical infrastructure activities for the Advanced Light Source Upgrade (ALS-U) project, including AC distribution, electrical equipment, cable distribution, cable routing, cable tray and raceway systems, grounding, and related facility and experimental systems.

About the Advanced Light Source

The Advanced Light Source (ALS) is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science national scientific user facility that produces exceptionally bright soft and hard x-ray, ultraviolet, and infrared light. With a strong scientific reputation, expert staff, and advanced capabilities, the ALS attracts thousands of academic and industrial users each year in condensed matter and quantum materials, energy sciences, biosciences, earth and planetary sciences, and other fields.

We're here for the same mission: to bring science solutions to the world. Join our team and play a supporting role in our goal to address global challenges. Have a high level of impact and work for an organization associated with 17 Nobel Prizes.

What you will do:

At the Associate Electrical Engineer level, you will work with guidance from experienced engineers and technical leads to support the design, installation, integration, testing, and commissioning of electrical and cabling systems for programmatic, experimental, and facility applications.

  • Support the design and installation planning of AC distribution, electrical equipment, cable distribution, cable routing, cable tray/raceway systems, grounding, and related electrical infrastructure.
  • Develop and maintain engineering documentation, including electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, layouts, cable routing plans, equipment layouts, bills of materials, specifications, interface documentation, and installation work instructions.
  • Apply NEC requirements and established LBNL, ALS, ALS-U, and engineering practices to electrical design and installation activities.
  • Use CAD, 3D CAD, and E-CAD tools to develop and maintain electrical designs, including schematic capture, electrical layouts, and related engineering documentation.
  • Participate in design reviews and coordinate with engineers, scientists, technicians, and other technical staff to resolve design and installation issues.
  • Support contractor and subcontractor activities by reviewing technical documentation, responding to field questions, monitoring work, and verifying that installations conform to approved designs.
  • Support electrical system integration, testing, troubleshooting, and commissioning.
  • Support project planning activities, including material requirements, cost estimates, procurement documentation, installation planning, and readiness activities.
  • Maintain engineering drawings, software, records, and documentation in accordance with laboratory configuration-control requirements.
  • Contribute to improvements in engineering procedures, documentation, standards, and installation practices.
  • Provide technical assistance and guidance to technicians, designers, and less-experienced staff as appropriate.

At the Electrical Engineer level, you will independently lead electrical engineering activities for complex programmatic, experimental, and facility systems. You will exercise engineering judgment, establish technical approaches, coordinate multidisciplinary activities, and provide technical leadership throughout design, installation, integration, testing, and commissioning.

  • Lead the design and installation planning of AC distribution, electrical equipment, cable distribution, cable routing, cable tray/raceway systems, grounding, and related electrical infrastructure for complex systems.
  • Independently develop engineering solutions for projects of diverse and complex scope, including evaluating alternatives and resolving non-standard technical problems.
  • Develop, review, and approve electrical engineering documentation, including schematics, wiring diagrams, layouts, cable routing plans, equipment layouts, specifications, bills of materials, installation work instructions, and configuration-controlled documentation.
  • Interpret and apply NEC requirements and LBNL, ALS, ALS-U, and other applicable engineering standards to complex electrical distribution and installation projects.
  • Lead electrical system design, installation, integration, testing, troubleshooting, and commissioning activities.
  • Lead multidisciplinary engineering coordination with mechanical engineering, controls/software engineering, physics, operations, safety, project controls, and other technical organizations.
