Role Overview

Join athenahealth as a Senior Software Engineer on the athenaCollector Rules team, where you will help build the software that powers critical revenue cycle management capabilities for healthcare providers. In this hybrid role based in Boston, MA, you will design and deliver scalable, secure, and maintainable software that supports claims processing, billing workflows, and operational efficiency across the athenaOne platform. athenaCollector builds technology solutions that automate Revenue Cycle Management (RCM). Our team focuses on implementing the essential back-office processes that support the unique claims cycle requirements of healthcare practices. We work together to deliver software that is scalable, reliable, and grounded in a deep understanding of the business and technical needs of our users. This team plays a key role in helping healthcare organizations manage business operations and revenue cycle performance with confidence. Your work will directly support automation, reliability, observability, and measurable improvements for both our clients and internal teams. You will collaborate across product, design, engineering, and operations to deliver high-quality solutions that enable customers to manage and maintain their own claim validation rules.

Essential Job Responsibilities
  • Design and develop user‑facing experiences using React, JavaScript/TypeScript, HTML, and CSS with a focus on performance, accessibility, and usability.
  • Develop and maintain backend services in Java and Spring Boot that support RCM Rules execution for claims processing.
  • Create, optimize, and maintain SQL‑based data models and queries for Oracle and PostgreSQL databases.
  • Support deployment and operation of containerized services on AWS, including ECS, EKS, EC2, Docker, and Kubernetes.
  • Partner with platform and SRE teams to strengthen reliability, observability, and operational readiness.
  • Apply infrastructure‑as‑code and DevOps automation practices; Terraform experience is a plus.
  • Collaborate with engineers, product managers, designers in design discussions, code reviews, and delivery planning.
  • Troubleshoot production issues, perform root‑cause analysis, and implement durable fixes that reduce operational risk.
  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to team learning, technical discussions, and engineering best practices.
  • Contribute to architectural conversations and help shape technical direction for the product area.
  • Produce technical documentation, runbooks, and API documentation for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Support performance tuning, scalability testing, and continuous improvement of software quality.
  • Explore and apply AI capabilities in engineering workflows and product features, that improve productivity and client outcomes.
  • Support deployment and integration activities as needed.
  • Participate in on‑call rotation and incident response support as needed.
Expected Education & Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 4–8 years of professional software development experience.
  • Strong experience building frontend applications using React, JavaScript, HTML, and CSS.
  • Solid experience developing backend services in Java and Spring Boot.
  • Proficiency with SQL and working knowledge of Oracle and PostgreSQL databases.
  • Experience with AWS services, including ECS, EKS, EC2, Docker, and Kubernetes.
  • Experience in AI/LLM technologies, prompt engineering, and agentic AI patterns, or a demonstrated willingness to develop expertise in these areas.
  • Understanding of infrastructure‑as‑code and DevOps concepts; Terraform experience is a plus.

Expected Compensation $119,000 - $203,000 The base salary range shown reflects the full range for this role from minimum to maximum. At athenahealth, base pay depends on multiple factors, including job‑related experience, relevant knowledge and skills, how your qualifications compare to others in similar roles, and geographical market rates. Base pay is only one part of our competitive Total Rewards package - depending on role eligibility, we offer both short and long‑term incentives by way of an annual discretionary bonus plan, variable compensation plan, and equity plans.
