Job Description Role Overview

The Senior R&D Engineer will play a key role within BD’s Urology and Critical Care business with a primary focus on leading engineering design and development efforts, including internally developed and externally partnered technologies. This role requires strong technical judgment and the ability to independently lead design evaluation, integration, and development activities, ensuring solutions align with clinical needs. You may have the opportunity to develop products in any of UCC’s product platforms: Endourology, Urinary Incontinence, and Urinary Management.

You will have a direct impact on multiple products and innovations across BD’s portfolios by driving evaluation and integration of new technologies across BD’s portfolio. Operating at the intersection of clinical application, engineering design, and market strategy , you will collaborate across R&D, Marketing, and external partners to translate user needs and emerging trends into innovative solutions.

Your work will directly contribute to advancing products that improve outcomes across urology and critical care , delivering meaningful value to patients and clinicians while strengthening BD’s position in urology and critical care markets.

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related technical field with 4 + years of relevant experience , or

  • Master’s degree in Engineering or related field with 2+ years of relevant experience

What You’ll Work On
  • Products across BD’s UCC platforms, including endourology, urinary incontinence, and urinary management

  • Minimally invasive and catheter-based devices across urology and critical care applications

  • External partner-developed technologies integrated into BD’s portfolio

  • Design changes, risk reduction, and product lifecycle improvements

  • Emerging and next-generation technologies across UCC platforms

  • Design improvements and new product development

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead engineering workstreams for evaluation, integration, and modification of medical devices

  • Independently assess external partner designs for technical soundness, risk, and compliance

  • Define and drive test strategies, validation plans, and data-driven decision making

  • Ensure rigorous application of design controls and risk management (ISO 14971, FDA QSR)

  • Serve as a technical lead interface with external partners and suppliers, influencing decisions and challenging assumptions

  • Collaborate with Marketing to translate user needs and emerging market trends into engineering requirements

  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to development of team technical capability

  • Drive high-quality engineering documentation (DHF, reports, risk files) suitable for regulatory submission

Technical Skills (Expected Level of Competence)

Working Knowledge (expected):

  • Design controls and regulatory frameworks (ISO 13485, 21 CFR 820.30)

  • Risk management (ISO 14971)

  • Test method development, validation, and data interpretation

  • Technical evaluation of developed and in-development products and data

  • Statistical analysis and interpretation of engineering data

  • Supplier/manufacturing processes impacting product quality

  • Product development lifecycle documentation (DHF, protocols, reports)

Exposure (preferred):
  • Intellectual property, FTO considerations, and competitive landscape
Preferred Experience
  • Experience in endourology or minimally invasive device development , including ureteroscopes, catheters, access systems, or fluid management

  • Understanding of urinary tract anatomy and physiology (kidneys, ureters, bladder)

  • Experience with clinical workflow of endourological procedures

  • Demonstrated success working with external development partners or OEMs

  • Experience translating clinical/user insights into product requirements

  • Familiarity with urology market trends and technologies
